Curlies Beach Shack
Curlies has been on Anjuna Beach since the 1980s, making it one of Goa's oldest and most storied venues. By day, it's a beach shack serving beer and fried fish to sunbathers. After dark, it transforms. The sound system comes alive with psytrance and electronic music, the dance area fills with an international crowd, and the party continues until the authorities or the dawn force a stop. Curlies is where Goa's hippie past and present-day party culture intersect.
What to Expect
A beach shack by day that becomes an electronic music venue at night. The setting is sandy, open-air, and directly on Anjuna Beach. The crowd is more international and alternative than Baga's clubs. Music is psytrance, techno, and progressive electronic. Shoes come off. Dancing is barefoot in the sand.
Raw, sandy, and free-spirited. The ocean provides the bass undertone. The trance provides the melody. On good nights, the energy is transcendent. On quiet nights, it's just a beach shack with music.
Psytrance, progressive trance, techno, and deep house. The music leans toward Goa's trance heritage. Guest DJs from the global trance circuit play during peak season.
None. Beachwear, barefoot, whatever. This is a beach shack. Nobody cares what you're wearing.
Trance music fans, travelers seeking authentic Goa party culture, beach-to-party transitions, budget nightlife, solo travelers
Cash strongly preferred. Some card terminals exist but connectivity is unreliable on the beach.
Price Range
Beer 150-250 INR, cocktails 300-500 INR, food 200-500 INR, no cover for the shack, event nights 500-1,500 INR
Beer ~1.80-3 USD / 1.60-2.70 EUR, cocktails ~3.50-6 USD / 3.20-5.50 EUR

08:00 to late (closing time varies; official close 10 PM for the shack, but party nights run to 02:00 or beyond)
Insider Tip
Come for sunset and stay. The transition from beach shack to party happens organically and is the best way to experience the venue. Sit at the tables nearest the dance area to feel the shift. Wednesday nights after the Anjuna Flea Market are strong. Cash is safer than cards here.
Full Review
Curlies is a contradiction that works: a ramshackle beach shack that has hosted some of Goa's most memorable parties. The structure is basic. Bamboo and palm-leaf roofing, plastic chairs and wooden tables on sand, a kitchen turning out fish and chips, and a bar mixing basic cocktails. The magic isn't in the architecture. It's in the location and the sound.
The venue sits at the south end of Anjuna Beach, where the sand meets rocky outcrops. During the day, it's a functioning beach shack serving food and drinks to sunbathers. The sunset from Curlies is among North Goa's best, with the sun dropping into the Arabian Sea directly in front of you.
After dark, the transformation begins. The sound system powers up. The DJ booth, modest but functional, starts pushing psytrance or progressive electronic music into the night air. The tables get pushed aside or absorbed into the expanding dance area. Shoes come off. The crowd grows.
The music is the differentiator. While Baga's clubs play Bollywood and commercial EDM, Curlies maintains a connection to Goa's original trance scene. Guest DJs from the international psytrance circuit (Astrix, Vini Vici, Infected Mushroom have all played here or nearby) appear during peak season. Regular nights feature local DJs who understand the lineage.
Curlies occupies contested cultural territory. It has faced government attention over noise regulations, beach-zone environmental rules, and the broader tension between Goa's party culture and residential peace. Operations have been disrupted before and may be again. Check current status before planning a visit around a specific event.
Compared to Hilltop (more committed to trance, hilltop location) and Shiva Valley (nearby on Anjuna Beach, similar vibe), Curlies wins on accessibility and daytime-to-night transition. You don't need to plan a trip to Curlies. You just end up there.
