Background

I've spent the better part of twelve years writing about cities most guidebooks only scratch the surface of. My background is in cultural anthropology and journalism, and I've contributed to several international travel publications covering urban nightlife, safety, and the legal landscapes that shape how cities operate after dark.

I grew up between Italy and Portugal, which gave me an early sense of how differently cultures treat the same social realities. I speak English, Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish fluently, with enough German to get around Berlin without too much trouble. That language range has been invaluable for reading local news, court records, and government advisories in their original text rather than relying on translations.

Over the past decade I've reported from more than 40 countries across Southeast Asia, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and East Africa. My work has always gravitated toward the spaces between what's legal and what's practiced, the gap between official policy and street-level reality.

Why This Project

The idea for The Discreet Gentleman came from frustration. When I looked at the information available to travelers about adult nightlife, I found two extremes: exploitative clickbait full of objectifying language and dangerous misinformation, or decade-old forum posts with outdated pricing and legal information that could genuinely put someone at risk.

There was nothing in between. No resource that treated the subject the way a consular travel advisory would, with factual detail, legal context, and a genuine concern for the reader's safety. That's the gap this site fills.

Every country guide on this site goes through the same research process: local legal codes, government travel advisories, verified traveler reports, Google Places data for venue information, and where possible, on-the-ground verification. You can read the full breakdown on our methodology page.

Editorial Approach

I write these guides with the same standards I'd apply to any serious travel publication. The tone is deliberately neutral. You won't find rankings, "top 10" lists, or recommendations dressed up as editorial content. What you will find is specific, verifiable information: which laws apply, how they're enforced, what things cost, and what safety risks exist in a given area.

I don't accept payment from venues, tourism boards, or anyone else in exchange for coverage. The ratings on this site are based on documented criteria, not personal preference or commercial relationships. When I get something wrong, I want to know about it.
