Leopold Cafe
Leopold Cafe has been open since 1871, making it one of Mumbai's oldest continuously operating restaurants. It gained international notoriety after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, when it was one of the first targets. Bullet holes in the walls were left unrepaired as a memorial. Today it's a tourist institution: crowded, loud, and serving cold Kingfisher to a revolving cast of backpackers, expats, and curious locals. The food is passable. The beer is cold. The history is real.

Grab a seat near the windows for people-watching on Colaba Causeway. The ground floor is louder and more social; upstairs is calmer. Stick to beer and simple dishes rather than the more ambitious menu items. It's busiest between 7 PM and 10 PM on weekends.

Leopold Cafe occupies a large ground-floor space on Colaba Causeway, with a second floor that's slightly calmer. The interior hasn't changed fundamentally in decades: ceiling fans, simple tables, and walls that now carry both age and bullet holes from November 26, 2008. The cafe chose to leave the damage visible, and it serves as a somber reminder amid the noise of beer glasses and tourist chatter.
As a bar, Leopold is functional rather than sophisticated. Kingfisher draught and bottled beer are the standards, served cold and fast. Cocktails exist on the menu but aren't the strength. The food menu is enormous, covering Indian, Chinese, and Continental dishes with varying success. The chicken tikka and the breakfast options are reliable. The rest is hit or miss.
Leopold's real product is its role as a social crossroads. On any given evening, the tables hold Australian backpackers, German couples, Indian college students, solo travelers with guidebooks, and expats who've been coming for years. The communal energy is genuine. Sitting alone at a table for more than 10 minutes usually results in someone joining you or starting a conversation.
The prices are higher than comparable Colaba bars (a Kingfisher costs 300 INR versus 200 INR at neighborhood alternatives), and you're paying the tourist-institution premium. For what it offers as a social experience and a piece of living history, most visitors consider it worthwhile at least once.
Leopold competes with Cafe Mondegar (more local, better jukebox, similar prices) and Woodside Inn (quieter, better beer). It wins on atmosphere and name recognition.
