Harbour Bar exists at the intersection of hospitality and history. The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel opened in 1903, and its ground-floor bar has served everyone from viceroys to Bollywood royalty. The space was restored after the 2008 attacks with meticulous attention to the original design: dark teak paneling, brass fixtures, arched windows looking across the harbour to the Gateway of India.
The drinks are classical. A gin and tonic, an old fashioned, a martini, each made with precision and presented without theatrics. The bar stocks an impressive whisky collection, with Indian single malts from Amrut and Paul John alongside Scotch and Japanese selections. Cocktails run 1,000 to 1,800 INR, which is steep even for Mumbai but aligns with the setting.
Service is the Taj standard: attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without lecturing, and uniformed in white jackets that haven't changed in style for decades. Bar snacks from the hotel kitchen are several notches above typical bar food. The prices reflect this.
The crowd varies by time of day. Afternoons bring hotel guests and business travelers. Evenings attract Mumbai's old money, visiting executives, and couples celebrating something. Late nights are quieter, with the serious drinkers settling in for a last whisky before the 1 AM close.
Harbour Bar has no real competition in its category. Other five-star hotel bars in Mumbai (the Trident, the Oberoi) offer similar price points but lack the Taj's historical gravity. Aer at the Four Seasons has better views but is a different kind of experience entirely.
