Hilltop
Hilltop is Goa trance in its purest surviving form. An open-air venue perched on a hill above Vagator Beach, it hosts electronic music events tied to full moons, new moons, and seasonal openings that draw an international crowd of trance devotees. The space is raw: a flattened hilltop with a sound system, a bar, some lights, and the sky. No walls, no air conditioning, no pretense. When the system fires up and the bass rolls down the hillside, you understand why people fly to Goa for this.
What to Expect
An open-air hilltop dance floor with a powerful sound system, international trance and electronic DJs, and a crowd that knows why they're there. The setting is dark, natural, and elemental. No fancy lighting beyond basic rigs. The music and the stars overhead provide the experience.
Raw, spiritual, and intense. When the music connects, the hilltop becomes something close to a religious experience for trance fans. When it doesn't, it's a dark hill with loud music. Your relationship with the music determines your experience.
Psytrance, progressive trance, Goa trance, and techno. The booking leans toward established names in the global trance circuit. Full-moon events tend toward harder, faster trance.
None. Anything goes. Barefoot is common. Comfort over style.

Full Review
Hilltop is not a club. It's a location that becomes a venue when the conditions are right. The physical infrastructure is minimal: a flattened area on a hill above Vagator, a professional-grade sound system, a basic lighting rig, a bar made from bamboo and corrugated metal, and improvised toilet facilities. The luxury is the setting. Open sky above, palm-tree canopy around the edges, and on clear nights, a ceiling of stars that city dwellers haven't seen in years.
The music is the purpose. Hilltop books DJs from the global psytrance and progressive trance circuits. Names like Astrix, Ace Ventura, Captain Hook, and Avalon have played here. Local residents and DJs from Israel (which has a deep connection to Goa's trance scene) round out the lineups. The sound system is powerful and well-tuned for the open-air space, delivering bass that travels down the hillside.
Events follow lunar and seasonal cycles. Full-moon parties are the marquee events, drawing the largest crowds (1,000+ on big nights). New-moon events tend to be smaller and darker in both lighting and music style. Season openers and closers (October/November and February/March) have their own energy.
The crowd at Hilltop is more international and more committed to the music than at any other Goa venue. Israeli travelers, European trance fans, Indian electronic music enthusiasts, and long-stay Goa residents make up the core. The atmosphere on the dance floor is focused and communal rather than party-holiday chaos.
Hilltop operates in a legal gray area. Events require permits, and not all events have them. Police raids happen. Checking the current status before attending is wise. Local contacts, beach shack staff, and printed flyers in Anjuna/Vagator shops are more reliable information sources than social media.
Compared to Curlies (more accessible, beach location, mixed programming), Hilltop is the purist's choice. It's less comfortable, harder to find, less predictable, and potentially the best night of your trip if the music hits.
The Neighborhood
Hilltop sits on a hill between Vagator and Anjuna, above the road that connects the two beaches. The exact location is common knowledge locally but not prominently signed.
Getting There
Scooter or taxi to Hilltop, Vagator. Ask locally for current access directions; the entrance road shifts. From Vagator Beach, it's a 5-minute ride up the hill. From Anjuna, 10 minutes. Parking is informal on the hillside. Bring a torch for walking the dark paths. Pilot services wait at the base of the hill during events.
