Nevizade Sokak Meyhane Row
Nevizade Sokak is a narrow pedestrian street just off Istiklal Caddesi that has become Istanbul's most famous meyhane row. Both sides of the lane are lined with traditional taverns, their tables spilling out until barely a meter separates opposing restaurants. The experience is communal, loud, and thoroughly Turkish. Every meyhane follows the same basic format: cold meze plates first (20-30 options on a rolling tray you pick from), warm meze next, then grilled fish or meat if you still have room. Raki is the mandatory drink, poured at the table with water and ice. Beer and wine are available but feel beside the point. A full evening costs TRY 300-600 (EUR 8-16) per person, depending on how much you drink and whether you order fish. Raki runs TRY 80-150 (EUR 2-4) per glass, with bottles at TRY 300-500 (EUR 8-13). Live fasil music (traditional Turkish tavern music with violin, oud, and vocals) moves between the meyhane most evenings, and some have their own in-house musicians. The street gets packed from Thursday through Saturday. Summer sees tables extending into the alley until the whole street becomes one continuous outdoor dining room. Winter pushes everyone inside, where the rooms are warm, smoky, and intimate. Quality varies between meyhane, but the overall experience is consistent: good food, free-flowing raki, and an atmosphere that builds to singing along by midnight.
What to Expect
A narrow street packed with tables and people. You'll choose a meyhane (or let a waiter choose you), sit down, and a rolling tray of 20-30 cold meze plates will appear. Point at what you want. Raki arrives in a tall glass with water on the side. Music drifts from somewhere. By your third glass, you might be singing along to songs you don't know the words to.
Boisterous, musical, and deeply social. The street itself becomes the venue.
Live fasil music (violin, oud, kanun, vocals). Traditional Turkish tavern songs.
Casual to smart casual. The crowd ranges from students to businesspeople unwinding after work.
Anyone who wants the definitive Istanbul meyhane experience. Groups of 4-6 get the best value and the most fun.
Most meyhane accept cards. Cash is useful for tipping musicians.

Insider Tip
Go on a weekday for a more local experience without the weekend tourist crush. Don't fill up on cold meze; save room for the warm plates and grilled fish. Let the waiter bring the meze tray and point at what looks good rather than ordering from the menu. Raki with white cheese and melon is the classic combination.
Full Review
Nevizade on a Friday night is Istanbul compressed into a single street. I arrived at 8 PM and the lane was already full, tables pushed together, waiters weaving between them with impossible skill, and the sound of clinking raki glasses mixing with a violin somewhere to my left. I chose a meyhane halfway down the street with a few empty spots near the back.
The cold meze tray arrived within minutes. I counted 24 different plates on the rolling cart: everything from atom (spicy tomato paste) to midye dolma (stuffed mussels) to a smoky eggplant puree I couldn't stop eating. I picked six plates and they cost about TRY 180 combined. Raki, a double, came to TRY 120. The ritual of adding water and watching it cloud white never gets old.
Warm meze followed: fried calamari, liver albanez, and grilled halloumi. Then the waiter suggested grilled levrek (sea bass), and I was too deep into the raki to refuse. The fish was simply grilled and excellent. A fasil trio, violin, oud, and vocal, stopped at the meyhane and played four songs. The table next to mine sang along to every word. I clapped badly.
Total damage for one person: about TRY 550 including generous raki consumption and a whole fish. For the quality of food, the live music, and the atmosphere, this is one of Istanbul's great bargains. Come hungry, come thirsty, and don't plan anything else for the evening.
The Neighborhood
Nevizade Sokak branches off Istiklal Caddesi in the heart of Beyoglu, Istanbul's main entertainment district. The street has been a meyhane destination for decades and represents the polished, tourist-accessible side of Istanbul's raki culture. Balik Pazari (the fish market) sits at the entrance.
Getting There
Walk along Istiklal Caddesi from Taksim Square (about 8 minutes). Turn into Cicek Pasaji or Balik Pazari (the fish market arcade), and Nevizade Sokak is the street running parallel just behind it. Taksim metro (M2) or the historic Tunel funicular both connect to Istiklal.
