Beyoğlu, Istanbul

Arkaoda started in Kadikoy on the Asian side as a grungy music bar and cultural space that became a gathering point for Istanbul's alternative scene. The Beyoglu branch brings that same energy to the European side, operating from a multi-level space that hosts DJ nights, live concerts, art exhibitions, and the occasional film screening. The music leans alternative: indie rock, post-punk, electronic, and experimental acts that don't fit the mainstream Turkish club circuit. No cover charge most nights, which keeps the door open for students and creatives who can't afford TRY 200 entry fees elsewhere. Beer costs TRY 100-150 (EUR 2.50-4), simple cocktails run TRY 150-250 (EUR 4-6.50). The crowd is young, artistic, and unpretentious. Think ripped jeans, vintage band t-shirts, and conversations about the latest Biennale. The space itself is scruffy by design: mismatched furniture, walls covered in flyers and art prints, dim lighting that flickers when the bass hits. DJ sets run from about 10 PM on weekends and the vibe builds slowly, peaking well after midnight. Weeknight programming includes open mic nights, poetry readings, and small acoustic sets. This is Beyoglu's counterculture living room.

What to Expect

A dimly lit, multi-level bar with art on the walls, music that skews alternative, and a crowd that looks like they walked out of an indie film. The ground floor has the bar and main socializing area. Upstairs hosts smaller events. The energy is relaxed early and builds late. Conversations come easy.

Atmosphere

Scruffy, creative, and warm. A living room for Beyoglu's artistic fringe.

Indie rock, post-punk, electronic, experimental. DJ sets and live acts.

Very casual. The more you look like you don't care about your clothes, the more you fit in. Vintage and thrift store finds are the unofficial dress code.

Alternative music fans, artists, students, and travelers who want to see Istanbul's creative underground rather than its polished surface.

Payment

Cash and cards accepted.

Price Range

Beer TRY 100-150 (EUR 2.50-4), cocktails TRY 150-250 (EUR 4-6.50), no cover most nights

Insider Tip

Check their Instagram for the weekly event calendar. Wednesday open mic nights can be surprisingly good. The upstairs area is quieter if you want to talk. Don't overdress; the crowd will read it as ironic.

Full Review

Arkaoda feels like it shouldn't work commercially, and maybe it doesn't, but it works as a space. I walked in on a Thursday around 9 PM and found about 20 people scattered across mismatched chairs and couches. The walls were covered with flyers for art shows, zines tacked to a corkboard, and a few paintings that looked like they'd been there long enough to become part of the architecture.

Beer was TRY 120 for an Efes. Nothing special, but the price felt right for the environment. A DJ started around 10 PM, spinning a mix of Turkish indie bands I'd never heard of and international post-punk classics. The Siouxsie and the Banshees track that blended into a Turkish shoegaze band was a transition I didn't know I needed.

The crowd grew slowly. By midnight, the room held maybe 60 people. A filmmaker started talking to me about the Kadikoy original location with genuine nostalgia. A graphic designer showed me her zine about Istanbul's street cats. Two guys debated Turkish rap in the corner with an intensity usually reserved for football.

Arkaoda won't appeal to everyone. The drinks are basic, the furniture is uncomfortable, and the bathroom situation is best not discussed. But for travelers who want to meet Istanbul's creative class rather than its tourist-facing side, this is where they gather. No cover, no pretension, no bottle service. Just music, cheap beer, and people who care about interesting things.

The Neighborhood

The Beyoglu branch of Arkaoda sits in the side streets off Istiklal, part of a loose network of alternative bars and cultural spaces that form Beyoglu's underground scene. The original Kadikoy location remains the spiritual home, but this branch made the aesthetic accessible to the European side.

Getting There

From Istiklal Caddesi, head into the side streets toward Galata. The bar is in the Beyoglu backstreets, about a 5-minute walk from the main strip. Sishane metro (M2 line) is the nearest station. Taxis from Taksim take 5 minutes if traffic cooperates.

Address

Kadife Sokak No. 18, Kadiköy (original) / Beyoğlu branch
