Klein Garten

Beyoğlu, Istanbul

Klein Garten hides in a Beyoglu backstreet courtyard, one of those places you walk past three times before spotting the entrance. The concept is a secret garden bar, and the execution works. A narrow passage opens into an ivy-covered courtyard with mismatched furniture, fairy lights, and a bar tucked under a canopy. The cocktail menu changes seasonally and leans creative without being pretentious. Expect to pay TRY 200-350 (EUR 5-9) for cocktails that use fresh ingredients, house-made syrups, and proper technique. Beer runs TRY 100-150 (EUR 2.50-4). Wine starts at TRY 130 (EUR 3.25) for Turkish labels. The crowd is international, creative, and slightly bohemian: artists, writers, musicians, students from nearby universities, and expats who've adopted Beyoglu as home. The atmosphere is conversational rather than party-oriented. Music stays at background level, a mix of indie, jazz, and electronic that never competes with talking. The courtyard seats about 50 people, so it fills up on weekend evenings by 10 PM. In winter, a small indoor section takes over, but the garden is the soul of the place. Staff are knowledgeable about the drinks and happy to talk through the menu. English is spoken comfortably.

Full Review

I found Klein Garten on my third attempt. The alleyway entrance near Sahkulu Mahallesi is deliberately understated, just a small sign and a narrow doorway. Past a short corridor, the courtyard opened up into what felt like stumbling into someone's beautifully curated back garden. Ivy climbed the surrounding walls, fairy lights created a warm canopy above, and a cat slept on an empty chair as if it owned the place.

The cocktail menu listed about 15 options with descriptions that read like short stories. I ordered something with mezcal, fresh fig, and thyme (TRY 280) and watched the bartender build it with genuine care. It was excellent. Complex but balanced, the kind of drink where each sip reveals something new. A friend's gin-based creation with cucumber and Turkish rose water was equally impressive.

The crowd on a Wednesday was small but interesting. Two artists discussed an exhibition at the next table. A Turkish-German couple practiced switching between languages. An American writer worked on something in a notebook. Nobody was looking at their phone, which felt unusual enough to notice.

Klein Garten is what happens when someone builds a bar for the experience rather than the revenue. The courtyard is small, the margins are probably thin, and the location is deliberately hard to find. But once you're in, the combination of good drinks, genuine atmosphere, and a crowd that's there for the right reasons makes it one of Beyoglu's best secrets.

The Neighborhood

Klein Garten sits in the backstreets of Beyoglu, a few minutes' walk from the noise and foot traffic of Istiklal Caddesi. The surrounding area is a mix of residential buildings, small galleries, and other hidden bars that form Beyoglu's alternative nightlife layer.

Getting There

From Istiklal Caddesi, turn into the side streets near Galata Tower. The bar is in the Sahkulu Mahallesi neighborhood, about a 5-minute walk from the main street. Sishane metro station (M2 line) is the closest public transport stop.
