Vinyl & Plastic

Seomyeon, Busan

Vinyl & Plastic is a small craft cocktail bar in Seomyeon's backstreet commercial zone, named for its collection of vinyl records stacked along one wall. The room seats around 30 people at the bar and a handful of small tables. The music is played from vinyl rather than digitally, which limits the program to what the owner has in stock: jazz, soul, funk, and indie rock from the 1960s through the 1990s. The cocktail list is short, changed seasonally, and made with care: fresh juice, good ice, and locally sourced spirits where possible. The crowd is Korean and tends toward the creative and professional middle class. The format is entirely conversation-oriented; no dance floor, no DJ, no events programming beyond occasional live jazz evenings.

Insider Tip

The owner curates the vinyl collection personally and will respond positively to requests if you know the artist and era. The bar seats near the record collection are the best position for conversation. Try the seasonal cocktail; it changes every four to six weeks and is consistently the best thing on the menu. The bar is small enough that arriving after 9:30 PM on a Friday means waiting for a seat.

Full Review

Vinyl & Plastic is the best bar in Seomyeon that isn't trying to be a nightclub. It's a small room where the owner's taste in music and cocktails has created a coherent and consistent environment without any of the trend-chasing that makes many small bars feel incoherent.

The cocktail quality is genuinely high by the standards of what Seomyeon offers. The seasonal menu rotates through combinations that show awareness of global cocktail culture without being pretentious about it. The whiskey highball, made with Japanese whisky and soda, is executed with the level of care that Koreans have brought to the format over the past decade.

The social environment is the bar's real strength. In a district where most venues are optimized for group drinking at loud volume, Vinyl & Plastic provides the conditions for the kind of conversation that requires hearing the other person. The regular clientele are curious about foreign visitors and approachable. Language exchange is easier here than anywhere else in Seomyeon.

For visitors whose ideal Seomyeon evening involves quality drinks and genuine social interaction rather than a dance floor, this is the starting point.
