Gorilla Brewing

Gorilla Brewing proved that Busan could produce craft beer worth drinking, and the Haeundae taproom is where they make their case most convincingly. The brewery launched in 2015 and built its reputation on beers that respected American craft traditions while incorporating Korean elements that gave them local identity.

The core lineup is solid. The IPA has enough hop character to satisfy American craft converts without the bitterness that alienates Korean palates. The wheat beer is clean and citrusy. The stout has real body. These are not boundary-pushing beers, but they're well-made and consistently good, which is what a taproom needs.

The seasonal specials are where Gorilla Brewing gets interesting. The yuzu wheat (a regular returning favorite) uses local citrus to create a beer that's refreshing in Busan's humid summers. A recent green tea pale ale was surprisingly successful, with the tea providing earthy bitterness that complemented rather than fought the hops. A makgeolli-inspired sour experiment was less successful but showed ambition.

The taproom space is designed for the social drinking that Korean beer culture demands. Long communal tables encourage group interaction. The bar seating works for solo visitors and couples. The outdoor area, which faces the street with an open-front design, captures the summer energy that makes Haeundae special. Watching the foot traffic heading to and from the beach while drinking a cold IPA is a simple pleasure that the bar delivers well.

The food menu supports the beer without trying to compete with it. Korean-influenced bar food (fried chicken, kimchi nachos, tteokbokki fries) pairs well with the beer lineup and keeps the kitchen manageable.

Gorilla Brewing's role in Haeundae is as a gathering point. It's where groups assemble before dinner, where couples start a date night, and where solo travelers find conversation. The beer is the medium; the socializing is the message.
