Expirat
Expirat has survived since the mid-2000s by staying true to a simple formula: underground music in a basement, cheap drinks, no pretension. The venue near Piata Universitatii hosts alternative rock, punk, electronic, and experimental acts in a space that feels like it hasn't been renovated since it opened. That's the charm. The concrete walls, low ceiling, and minimal lighting create a raw atmosphere that polished clubs can't replicate. Programming rotates between live bands and DJ nights, with a strong lean toward the edges of Romanian and international music scenes. The crowd is loyal, local, and committed to the idea that a good venue doesn't need a dress code or a cocktail menu.
What to Expect
A dark, raw basement venue. Loud music. Cheap drinks. A crowd that came for the music, not the Instagram photo. If the aesthetic of a polished club matters to you, look elsewhere. If the music matters more than the wallpaper, you'll love it.
Gritty, loud, and genuine. The anti-Fratelli.
Alternative rock, punk, post-punk, electronic, experimental, and live bands
None. Come as you are.
Indie music fans and anyone who prefers a raw, authentic venue over a polished nightclub experience.

Full Review
Expirat sits in a basement near Strada Academiei, a few minutes' walk from Piata Universitatii. The staircase down leads to a single room with a small stage, a bar along the back wall, and a floor area that serves as both standing room for concerts and dance floor for DJ nights. The ceiling is low. The ventilation is minimal. When the room fills, it gets hot and sweaty fast.
The venue's longevity in Bucharest's shifting nightlife scene speaks to what it does right: consistent programming that respects its audience. Live band nights bring Romanian alternative, punk, and post-punk acts that draw dedicated followings. Electronic nights lean experimental, with sets that would be too weird for mainstream clubs but perfect for this room. The sound system is adequate for the space, better for live bands than for electronic bass.
Drinks are among the cheapest in Old Town. Beer at 10-18 RON and basic cocktails at 20-35 RON mean you can have a full night out for under 100 RON including entry. The bar is cash-friendly and efficient. Don't expect craft cocktails or an extensive wine list.
Expirat fills a necessary niche. Every nightlife scene needs a basement venue where the music comes first and everything else is secondary. Bucharest's version is here. The crowd is reliable: music people, artists, students from the arts university, and the occasional tourist who wandered in and stayed all night.
The venue can feel empty on slow midweek nights. The sweet spot is a weekend show with a good headliner, when the room hits capacity and the energy bounces off the concrete walls. Check the lineup before going. The experience varies dramatically depending on who's playing.
