Rouge Bar

Poble Sec, Barcelona

Rouge Bar is a small cocktail bar on Carrer del Poeta Cabanyes in Poble Sec, a narrow room with exposed brick walls, warm pendant lighting, and a long bar that takes up about half the floor space. The bar has been running since the mid-2010s and has settled into its role as a quieter, cocktail-forward alternative to the busy tapas strip on Carrer Blai just around the corner. The drink list covers the classics with care and includes a dozen or so signature builds that rotate seasonally. Gin and tonics are a particular strength, with a range of Spanish gins and a well-curated tonic selection. Prices sit fair for Barcelona cocktails: 8-10 EUR for most builds, a euro or two below what you'd pay in El Born or upper Gothic. The crowd is mostly local, a mix of Poble Sec neighbors and Catalan visitors from other parts of the city, with a steady but not overwhelming international presence. The room holds about 30 seats including the bar stools, and weekends fill up early. Music stays at a level that allows easy conversation, and the vibe is adult without being formal. Good pre-dinner or post-show stop.

Full Review

Rouge Bar sits on Carrer del Poeta Cabanyes, a short block off the busier Carrer Blai tapas strip. The frontage is small and the signage understated, so it's easy to walk past. Inside, the bar runs along the left wall, exposed brick covers the right, and a few small tables occupy the back. Pendant bulbs hang at varying heights, giving the room a soft, warm glow. The bartender on the night I visited was working alone, stirring drinks in a mixing glass with the unhurried rhythm that separates cocktail bars from clubs.

I ordered a gin and tonic with Gin Mare and a Mediterranean tonic, served in a copa glass with rosemary and lemon peel. At 10 EUR it was priced squarely in the middle of Barcelona's cocktail market, and the execution was sound: cold, properly diluted, botanically coherent. A follow-up Negroni was equally competent, stirred correctly and served over a single large ice cube. Neither drink was remarkable, but both were reliable.

The crowd at 22:00 on a Thursday was about eight people at the bar and another six across the tables, mostly Catalan-speaking couples in their 30s. A couple of Italian visitors sat at the far end of the bar, comparing notes on which Barcelona bars they'd been to. The conversation level stayed low, the music sat below conversation volume, and the bartender engaged with anyone who asked about the menu.

Compared to the chaos of Carrer Blai's pincho bars a block away, Rouge is a calming option. Use it as a pre-dinner stop, an after-Apolo wind-down, or a starting point before heading to a show. Pair with dinner at one of the restaurants on Carrer Blai for a complete Poble Sec evening.

The Neighborhood

Carrer del Poeta Cabanyes sits parallel to Carrer Blai, Poble Sec's best-known tapas street. The immediate area is residential with scattered bars and restaurants, significantly quieter than Raval or Gothic after dark.
