Sahara
Sahara is Iași's central cocktail terrace, positioned on Piața Unirii in a spot that makes it the visible gathering point for the center's early-evening crowd. The bar occupies ground floor space with an outdoor terrace that extends onto the square during warm months, giving it a presence larger than the interior square footage suggests. The interior is clean and modern with a North African decorative note that doesn't dominate. Cocktails run 22-35 RON depending on complexity, higher than average for Iași but still modest by any other standard. The drink menu runs around 40 options including standard international classics, a short list of house specials, and Romanian wines by the glass. Beer runs 10-14 RON. The crowd skews toward the 25-35 range compared to the student pubs, which makes it one of the more mixed-age venues in the center. Evenings here are for drinks and conversation rather than dancing or live music. The terrace is the draw from April through October; the interior is functional but less distinct.

Full Review
Sahara's location on Piața Unirii is its primary advantage. The square is the center of Iași's civic life, and a terrace seat here puts you at the intersection of the evening foot traffic with views of the surrounding architecture. On summer evenings when the square fills with people, the terrace feels like the right place to be.
The bar itself is competently run. Cocktails are made correctly, not rushed. The menu covers the standard international list with house variations that use local fruits and Romanian spirits where possible. The wine selection leans Romanian, which makes sense given the country's underrated viticulture. The cocktails in the 22-30 RON range are the practical choices; the premium options at 32-35 RON are for occasions rather than everyday drinking.
The crowd at Sahara is consistently older than at the student pubs in Copou or even at Acaju during weeknight acoustic shows. Young professionals, couples, and the over-25 student cohort who've graduated out of Camera 80 and Pub Hardway populate the space. This makes it comfortable for travelers who don't want to be the oldest person in the room.
Service slows when the terrace fills to capacity. Staff numbers on busy summer evenings are adequate but not generous. Waiting 10-15 minutes for a drink order is normal on a Friday at peak time. Accept this rather than letting it become a frustration.
Sahara's limitation is its lack of distinctiveness. It does the central terrace cocktail bar role competently without having a personality that separates it from similar venues in any Romanian city. That's fine. Not every bar needs to be Roots Cafe.
