Janis Pub sits on Strada Matei Corvin, sharing the block with Flying Circus and within sight of Piata Unirii. The space is small, holding about 50-60 people comfortably, with a bar, a handful of tables, and a corner stage that accommodates a four-piece band at maximum. The walls are covered in framed records, signed posters, concert photos, and music memorabilia that has accumulated over two decades of operation.

The live music on weekends brings local blues and rock acts who play for audiences they can practically touch. The room's size makes every show feel intimate. Sound levels are reasonable for the space. A drummer and a guitarist fill the room without needing heavy amplification. Set times usually start around 9 PM and run two sets with a break.

Beer is the main event at the bar. Local options (Ursus, Ciuc, Bergenbier) and a few imports sit at 10-15 RON. Cocktails are available but basic. Wine by the glass is an option. The food menu is minimal or nonexistent depending on the night.

Janis succeeds because it doesn't try to be more than it is. The owner clearly loves rock and blues. The staff are friendly without being performative. The regulars welcome newcomers. The beer is cheap. The music is live. These ingredients have been enough for over twenty years, and they'll be enough for twenty more.

The pub is at its best on a cold Friday night in winter when the small room is full, the band is playing, and everyone has a beer in hand. It's at its worst on a quiet Tuesday when three people sit at the bar and the jukebox does the work. Time your visit accordingly.

Solo travelers should sit at the bar. The bartender and regulars will talk to you. It's one of the easier places in Cluj to strike up a conversation without a shared language requirement, though English works well with most of the crowd.
