Flying Circus
Flying Circus is a pub with a stage, and it's been doing this well on Strada Matei Corvin since the early 2010s. The venue books live music across a range of genres: blues, rock, acoustic, alternative, and the occasional jazz evening. The stage is small but adequate, the sound is balanced for a room this size, and the craft beer selection is among the best in Cluj. The atmosphere sits firmly in the comfortable space between 'proper concert venue' and 'friendly neighborhood pub.' People come to hear music, drink beer, and talk to strangers. That combination hasn't changed, and it doesn't need to. The crowd ranges from university students to middle-aged professionals who've been regulars since the place opened.

Insider Tip
Sit near the stage if you want to hear the music clearly. The back of the room gets conversational during sets. Try the local craft beer options before defaulting to an import. The Romanian craft scene is genuinely good.
Full Review
Flying Circus occupies a ground-floor corner space on Strada Matei Corvin, steps from Piata Unirii. The interior is pub-standard: dark wood, warm lighting, a bar running along one wall, and a small stage at the back. The walls display local art and music posters. Seating mixes tables, bar stools, and a few booths that fill first on busy nights.
Live music runs most evenings, with the schedule leaning toward acoustic and blues acts during the week and fuller bands on weekends. The stage is intimate, putting the audience within arm's reach of performers. Sound levels are set for the room, loud enough to appreciate the music, quiet enough that the person next to you doesn't have to shout. This balance is harder to achieve than it sounds, and Flying Circus gets it right.
The craft beer selection is a genuine strength. Romanian craft breweries (Ground Zero, Hop Hooligans, Zaganu, Sikaru) feature alongside Belgian and German imports. Prices run 15-25 RON per pint depending on the brew. The cocktail menu exists but is secondary to the beer. Food is bar-snack level.
The crowd is one of the most naturally diverse in Cluj's nightlife. University students, professors, tech workers, Erasmus exchange students, and locals who've been coming for years share the same bar. Conversations between strangers happen organically, especially at the bar and during set breaks. It's the kind of venue where solo travelers feel comfortable within minutes.
Flying Circus doesn't compete with Form Space or Midi for the electronic music audience. It occupies its own lane: the live music pub with good beer and friendly people. Cluj has several venues that attempt this format. Flying Circus has been doing it best for years.
The only downside is space. On a packed Friday with a popular band, the room fills beyond comfort. Arriving before 9 PM secures a seat.
