District VII, Budapest

Kuplung. the ruin bar that occupied a former car repair shop on Király utca 46, decorated with a giant whale, jellyfish lanterns, and deep-sea diver figures. closed permanently in 2018 when the site was sold for luxury apartment development. It had run since the early days of the Budapest ruin bar scene and was known for its weekday cheap drinks policy: almost every drink at just 360 HUF Sunday through Wednesday. The apartments now stand where the whale once hung. Any listing showing Kuplung as open is years out of date.

Insider Tip

Full Review

Kuplung closed permanently in 2018 after operating for years as one of District VII's most distinctive ruin bars in Budapest. The venue occupied a former car repair shop on Kiraly utca 46, decorated with a giant whale installation, jellyfish sculptures, and the kind of creative salvage art that defined the ruin bar movement at its most inventive and playful.

During its run, Kuplung attracted a crowd that valued the space's artistic character over pure party energy. The car repair shop origins were visible in the layout: a long, narrow room with high ceilings and a courtyard at the back that opened up the space on warmer evenings. It was rougher and more improvised than Szimpla Kert but carried a similar creative charge that made it feel alive.

The venue no longer exists at this address, and the space has moved on to other uses. Kiraly utca has continued to develop as a bar and restaurant street, and several active venues sit within a short walk of Kuplung's former location. Instant-Fogashaz at Akacfa utca 49-51 is the closest equivalent in scale and creative spirit, though its style and atmosphere are quite different.

This entry exists to update travelers using older guides or cached recommendation lists. The building at Kiraly utca 46 no longer operates as a nightlife venue. Budapest's ruin bar landscape continues to shift, with closures and openings changing the map every few years. Walking north on Kiraly utca from Kuplung's former spot will lead you past several active bars, restaurants, and wine shops.

The Neighborhood

Kuplung's 2018 closure predates the broader wave of ruin bar turnover in the Jewish Quarter. Kiraly utca, where it stood, remains one of District VII's main commercial streets with plenty of active nightlife options.

Getting There

The venue is permanently closed. Walk Kiraly utca from M2 metro Astoria or Deak ter for active alternatives. Instant-Fogashaz on Akacfa utca is nearby.
