District VII, Budapest

Anker't. the bar that claimed the largest beer garden in Budapest and ran a four-bar, dance-floor-and-vegan-pizza operation in an abandoned historical building steps from the Opera. closed permanently in early 2020 after eight years. The building on Paulay Ede utca has since been repurposed. If a venue guide has sent you to this address expecting a ruin bar, that information is out of date. The good news is that District VII still has Instant-Fogasház, Doboz, and Mazel Tov within a few minutes' walk.

Full Review

Anker't closed permanently in January 2020, and the space has not reopened as a nightlife venue since. During its years of operation, the venue claimed the largest beer garden in Budapest and ran a multi-bar complex with a dance floor, food options including vegan pizza, and a courtyard that drew crowds deep into District VII's ruin bar circuit on any given night.

At its peak, Anker't was a genuine competitor to Szimpla Kert for the title of Budapest's best ruin bar. The courtyard was enormous, the programming was consistent and creative, and the crowd balanced tourists with locals in a way that few competitors managed. The food options, particularly the vegan pizza, gave it a practical edge over bars that treated food as an afterthought.

The building and courtyard are no longer part of the nightlife circuit. The closure left a visible gap in the neighborhood that took time to fill. Visitors who encounter Anker't in older travel guides or recommendation lists should redirect their plans accordingly. Doboz on Klauzal utca and Mazel Tov on Akacfa utca both carry on the District VII courtyard-bar tradition within a few minutes' walk of Anker't's former location.

There is nothing to visit at this address today. The information here exists to correct outdated guides that still list the venue as active and operational. Budapest's ruin bar scene shifts constantly, and Anker't's closure is one of the more significant losses of the past decade. The spirit of what it offered continues across multiple venues in the Seventh District.

The Neighborhood

Anker't's closure in 2020 removed one of the Jewish Quarter's anchor venues. The surrounding streets remain packed with active bars and ruin pubs that absorbed much of its former audience.

Getting There

The venue is permanently closed. For nearby alternatives, head to Doboz on Klauzal utca or Mazel Tov on Akacfa utca, both reachable from M2 metro Blaha Lujza ter.
