Full Review

Pontoon is exactly what the name describes: a floating bar platform moored to the Pest embankment beside the Chain Bridge's northern pillar. The setup is seasonal, running from April through mid-October, and the entire appeal is the view. The Danube, the Chain Bridge, the Buda hills across the water. It's one of Budapest's best drinking positions, full stop.

The bar serves beer, froccs (the Hungarian wine spritzer), and cocktails at reasonable prices. The crowd is mixed: after-work locals, tourists taking a break from sightseeing, couples watching the sunset, and small groups settling in for the evening. DJ sets lean toward chill electronic and house, keeping the volume at a level that serves the atmosphere rather than competing with it.

Pontoon doesn't try to be a nightclub or a restaurant. It's an outdoor bar on the river, and it does that one thing exceptionally well. Compared to Kiosk Budapest further along the embankment, Pontoon is more casual and significantly cheaper. Compared to the ruin bars inland, it trades enclosed chaos for open-air calm.

Sunset is the optimal time to arrive. Show up 30 minutes before it drops for the best light on the bridge and the hills. The bar fills quickly after sunset on warm evenings, and there's no reservation system; you just wait for a spot. Beer runs 900 to 1,400 HUF, cocktails 2,000 to 3,000 HUF. No cover charge. Weather-dependent by nature, so check conditions before heading out.

The Neighborhood

Pontoon floats at one of the most photographed points on the Pest embankment, right where the Chain Bridge meets the river. Its seasonal presence has become a fixed part of Budapest's warm-weather social calendar.

Getting There

Walk from Deak Ferenc ter metro (M1/M2/M3) in about eight minutes, or take tram 2 along the Danube embankment to the Chain Bridge stop.
