Kazimierz, Krakow

Taawa is Krakow's most serious craft cocktail bar, operating from a compact space on ul. Jozefa 18. The bartenders compete internationally and bring that precision to every drink. The menu changes seasonally and builds around local Polish ingredients: forest berries, honey, regional herbs, and Polish spirits that most visitors have never encountered. A single-origin Zubrowka variant or an obscure Silesian plum brandy might anchor a cocktail that tastes like nothing you've had before. The space seats maybe 30 people, with bar stools providing the best view of the preparation. Reservations aren't taken, so arrive early or be prepared to wait. The crowd is a mix of Krakow's cocktail enthusiasts, industry professionals from other bars, and travelers who've done their homework.

What to Expect

A focused cocktail bar where the drinks are the point. Small space, seasonal menu, and bartenders who take their craft seriously without being precious about it. Conversations about spirits and techniques happen naturally. Not a place to get drunk; a place to appreciate drinks.

Atmosphere

Intimate, focused, and quietly excellent. One of Poland's best bars.

Music

Low background music. Vinyl sometimes. The drinks are the focus.

Dress Code

No enforced code, but the crowd tends toward smart casual. The space rewards a slight effort.

Cocktail enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates well-made drinks with local character.

Cash and cards accepted. Contactless works.

Insider Tip

Sit at the bar and tell the bartender what flavors you like. They'll make something tailored that's almost always better than a random menu pick. The non-alcoholic cocktails are genuinely good, not afterthoughts. Go on a weeknight for the best experience and actual conversation with the bartenders.

Full Review

Taawa's entrance on Jozefa is easy to miss. A small sign, a door, and then a compact interior that seats about 30 across bar stools and a handful of small tables. The design is clean and minimal: good lighting at the bar for watching drink preparation, dimmer at the tables for conversation.

The cocktail program is where Taawa separates from the pack. The team competes at international bartending competitions and brings that technical skill to the everyday menu. Seasonal changes keep the offerings fresh, and the use of Polish ingredients gives the drinks a sense of place. A cocktail built around bison grass vodka, local honey, and apple tastes specifically of Poland in a way that imported concepts don't.

Compared to cocktail bars in Warsaw, Taawa holds its own and charges less. Compared to other Kazimierz bars, it's the most expensive place to drink but the quality gap justifies the premium. The bartenders are knowledgeable and enjoy talking about what they do. Ask questions. They'll explain the sourcing, the technique, and the thought behind each drink.

The main limitation is size. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the bar fills quickly and there's no reservation system. Showing up at 6 PM on a weekend guarantees a seat. Arriving at 10 PM means standing or waiting. Weeknight visits are more relaxed and allow deeper engagement with the bar staff.

The Neighborhood

Jozefa street is Kazimierz's cocktail corridor, with several bars within a short walk. Mercy Brown, Miejsce, and other spots line the same street. Plac Nowy is a five-minute walk for cheaper drinks and zapiekanki if you want to continue the evening at a different pace.

Getting There

Walk from Plac Nowy in three minutes along Jozefa. From the Rynek, it's a 15-minute walk south. Tram stop Plac Wolnica is five minutes away. Bolt from anywhere in central Krakow costs under 15 PLN.
