Vista Bar at Sedona Hotel

Inya Lake Area, Yangon

Vista Bar has occupied the ground floor of the Sedona Hotel Yangon for over two decades, making it one of the longest-running hotel bars in the city. The interior is classic hotel lounge: dark wood paneling, leather armchairs, a polished bar counter, and lighting calibrated for quiet conversation. Capacity is around 50 guests across bar seating and scattered tables. The drinks menu covers an extensive whiskey selection, classic cocktails, and a beer list that goes beyond the standard Myanmar Beer to include imported bottles. The bartenders have been here for years and know their regulars by name and drink preference. The crowd is almost entirely made up of long-term expats, embassy staff, and business travelers staying at the hotel. Tourists are uncommon, which gives Vista the feel of a members' club rather than a public bar. The Sedona has operated through every phase of Myanmar's recent history, from isolation to democratic opening to military coup, and Vista Bar has served drinks through all of it.

What to Expect

You'll walk into a quiet, air-conditioned room where people speak in measured tones and the ice in glasses makes the loudest sound. The bartender will acknowledge you quickly and offer a menu or ask what you'd like. The formality is gentle rather than stiff. It's a place designed for unwinding after a long day in a difficult country.

Atmosphere

Hushed, comfortable, and faintly nostalgic. Like drinking in a time capsule that's weathered every storm.

Music

Background lounge music and soft jazz. Barely noticeable, which is the point.

Dress Code

Business casual. Long trousers and a collared shirt are standard. Nobody will refuse entry for less, but you'll feel underdressed in shorts.

Insider Tip

The whiskey collection behind the bar is the real attraction. Ask the bartender for a recommendation and specify your budget range. The bar snacks are better than expected for a hotel lounge.

Full Review

Vista Bar at the Sedona is the bar equivalent of a comfortable pair of shoes. It's not flashy, not trying to be trendy, and doesn't need to prove anything. It's just been here, doing the same thing well, for a very long time.

The whiskey collection is the standout feature. Behind the bar sits a range of Scotch, Japanese, and American whiskeys that you wouldn't expect to find in Yangon. The Sedona has maintained import relationships through periods when most competitors couldn't, and the result is a back bar that rewards exploration. The bartenders are knowledgeable about the collection and make good recommendations once you give them a price range and flavor preference.

Classic cocktails are prepared correctly. An old fashioned comes with proper technique and good ice. A gin and tonic uses fresh citrus. Nothing revolutionary, but everything is done right. The consistency night after night is Vista's real achievement.

The crowd defines the experience. These are people who've chosen to live in Myanmar through difficult circumstances. Conversations carry weight, and the atmosphere reflects it. It's not somber exactly, but it's serious. If you sit at the bar and engage, you'll hear stories about Yangon that no guidebook contains.

The physical space shows its age gracefully. The leather has patina, the wood is worn in the right places, and the whole room has the settled quality of a place that's been lived in. Renovation would ruin it.

The Neighborhood

Vista Bar is in the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, in the Inya Lake district. The hotel is a landmark that every taxi driver knows. Other hotel bars at the nearby Novotel and Chatrium are within a 10-minute taxi ride.

Getting There

Taxi from downtown costs 5,000-8,000 MMK. Tell any driver 'Sedona Hotel' and they'll know the way. Enter through the hotel lobby and follow signs to the bar, or ask at reception.
