Bor Pen Nyang
Bor Pen Nyang takes its name from the Lao phrase meaning 'no worries,' and the place lives up to it. Sitting on the Mekong Riverfront along Fa Ngum Road, this open-air bar draws a steady mix of expats, backpackers, and English-speaking Lao regulars. Seating spreads across a covered terrace facing the river, with plastic chairs and wooden tables that get claimed fast on weekend evenings. The drink menu covers Beer Lao on draft, basic cocktails, and a short food menu of Lao and Western dishes. Capacity runs around 60 to 80 people, and on a Saturday night it pushes close to full. A small stage area hosts occasional acoustic acts, though music usually comes from speakers playing a mix of reggae, classic rock, and Lao pop. The bar has operated for over a decade and serves as the unofficial social hub for Vientiane's foreign resident community. Conversation flows easily here, partly because the regulars are welcoming and partly because there's nowhere else quite like it on the strip.
What to Expect
You walk into an open-air space with river views and the sound of conversation in three or four languages. Tables fill up gradually as the sun drops behind Thailand across the water. The atmosphere is casual to the point of being lazy, and that's exactly the point. Nobody's in a hurry.
Relaxed, social, and unpretentious. The kind of place where strangers start talking without an excuse.
Reggae, classic rock, and Lao pop from speakers. Occasional live acoustic sets on weekends.
Anything goes. Flip-flops, shorts, and tank tops are the local uniform. Nobody dresses up.
Solo travelers looking to meet people, expats wanting a regular haunt, and anyone who wants a cheap beer with a river view.
Cash (Lao kip preferred). Some nights they'll accept Thai baht. No cards.
Price Range

Insider Tip
Grab a riverside table before 7 PM on weekends or you'll be stuck at the back. The grilled fish is the best food item on the menu. Ask the staff about weekend live music schedules since they don't always post them online.
Full Review
Bor Pen Nyang sits in the middle stretch of Fa Ngum Road's bar strip, identifiable by its hand-painted sign and the cluster of motorbikes parked out front. The layout is simple: a covered terrace with river-facing seating, a bar counter along the back wall, and a small kitchen area producing Lao staples and a few Western dishes.
The crowd depends on the night. Weekdays bring a handful of expat regulars, development workers, and the occasional tourist who wandered in. Weekends pull a larger mix, including young Lao professionals and backpackers circulating through Vientiane. English is the common language at the bar, which makes it the easiest place in the city for a solo traveler to start a conversation.
Beer Lao on draft is the house standard, and at 15,000 to 20,000 LAK per glass it's almost free by international standards. Cocktails are basic but functional. The food deserves a mention; the grilled Mekong fish and laap are both solid. Service is friendly and unhurried. Staff know the regulars by name and treat new faces with the same warmth.
Compared to the flashier options further down the strip, Bor Pen Nyang wins on character. It doesn't try to be a nightclub or a cocktail lounge. It's a river bar where people come to talk, drink cheap beer, and watch the sun disappear over Thailand. For what it is, there's nothing better in Vientiane.
The Neighborhood
Located on Fa Ngum Road between Nam Phu fountain and the Don Chan Palace Hotel. The surrounding stretch has several similar open-air bars, street food vendors, and the Mekong promenade, which makes for a good pre-drink walk. Khop Chai Deu is a 10-minute walk northwest.
Getting There
A tuk-tuk from most central Vientiane guesthouses costs 20,000 to 30,000 LAK. Walking from Nam Phu fountain takes about 10 minutes heading southeast along the riverfront. The LOCA app can book rides, though coverage is inconsistent after 10 PM.
