Don Chan Palace

Mekong Riverfront, Vientiane

Don Chan Palace Hotel's top-floor lounge occupies a position that no other drinking spot in Vientiane can match. Sitting atop the city's tallest building at 14 stories, the lounge offers a 270-degree panorama of the Mekong River, the Thai side, and Vientiane's low skyline stretching to the horizon. The space is finished in dark wood and leather, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the view from every seat. A circular bar anchors the center of the room, surrounded by cocktail tables and plush armchairs. Capacity is modest, around 50 to 60 guests, which keeps the atmosphere intimate even on busy evenings. The cocktail menu features international standards mixed competently, and the wine list is the most extensive you'll find in the country. This is where Vientiane's diplomatic crowd, visiting business travelers, and well-heeled tourists come for drinks. It's the most expensive bar in the city, but 'expensive' in Vientiane still means your tab will be lower than a mid-range bar in most capital cities.

What to Expect

Step out of the elevator into a dim, polished room with views that stop you in your tracks. The Mekong catches the last light, Thailand glows faintly across the water, and the hum of conversation stays low. It feels like a different city from the riverfront bars 14 floors below.

Atmosphere

Refined and quiet. The only bar in Vientiane where people lower their voices on purpose.

Music

Soft jazz and lounge music at low volume. Background, not performance.

Dress Code

Smart casual. Long pants and closed shoes for men. No flip-flops or tank tops. You don't need a jacket, but looking presentable is expected.

Best For

Couples, business travelers, and anyone wanting one memorable drink with Vientiane's best view.

Payment

Credit cards accepted (Visa, Mastercard). Cash also welcome in kip, baht, or USD.

Price Range

Beer 40,000-50,000 LAK, cocktails 80,000-150,000 LAK, wine 60,000-120,000 LAK per glass

Beer ~$1.90-$2.40 / ~1.75-2.20 EUR, cocktails ~$3.80-$7.15 / ~3.50-6.60 EUR, wine ~$2.85-$5.70 / ~2.65-5.30 EUR

Hours

18:00-23:00 daily

Insider Tip

Go for sunset. Arrive by 5:30 PM to claim a window seat facing west. The martini is the best cocktail on the menu. Skip the food; it's overpriced for the quality. This is a one-drink-for-the-view kind of visit.

Full Review

The elevator to the Don Chan Palace lounge takes about 20 seconds, but the change in atmosphere is immediate. The ground-floor lobby of the hotel is functional and slightly dated. The top-floor lounge is a different proposition: dark wood paneling, leather seating, low lighting, and windows that turn the Mekong into a moving painting.

Seating clusters around small cocktail tables, with the best positions along the west-facing windows where sunset turns the river gold. The circular bar in the center serves a menu of international cocktails. The bartenders mix competently, not brilliantly. The martini and the whiskey sour are the strongest options. Wine by the glass is available, which is rare in Laos, though the selection is modest.

The crowd tends toward diplomats, NGO directors, and visiting executives. Tourists who find their way here are usually the type who research their destinations thoroughly. Conversation runs in English, French, and Lao. The dress code is enforced gently; staff won't turn you away for wearing sandals, but you'll feel out of place.

This is not a place to spend an entire evening. One or two drinks at sunset, then head down to the riverfront bars where the prices are a third of what you'll pay here. But for a single experience that captures Vientiane from a perspective most visitors never see, the Don Chan Palace lounge earns its spot on the itinerary. The bill will still be less than a round of drinks in Singapore.

The Neighborhood

The Don Chan Palace Hotel sits at the southeastern end of the Mekong Riverfront strip, near the junction of Fa Ngum Road and Khouvieng Road. The riverfront bars and clubs are within a 10-minute walk heading northwest. The night market at Chao Anouvong Park is about 15 minutes on foot.

Getting There

Any tuk-tuk driver in Vientiane knows the Don Chan Palace. It's the tallest building in the city and visible from most of central Vientiane. A ride from Nam Phu fountain costs 20,000 to 30,000 LAK. The hotel has its own parking if you're driving.
