Lao Lao Garden
Lao Lao Garden takes its name from the local rice whiskey and builds its identity around the casual, garden-party atmosphere that the name implies. The venue occupies a fenced garden compound just off Sisavangvong Road, with open-air seating spread across a courtyard dotted with trees and string lights. A covered bar area handles drink orders while a small stage hosts live music on most evenings. Capacity sits around 80 to 100 people across the garden and the covered areas. The crowd is predominantly backpackers and package-tour groups who arrive after dinner. Live music runs from about 8 PM until close, typically a Lao or Filipino cover band playing crowd-pleasers from classic rock to reggae to modern pop. The food menu offers both Lao and Western dishes at prices aimed squarely at tourists. Lao Lao whiskey features prominently on the drinks menu, served straight, with mixers, or in the venue's own cocktail recipes. The garden setting makes it one of the more pleasant drinking environments in town, though the live music quality varies by the night and the band.

Insider Tip
Try the Lao Lao whiskey at least once. It's cheap and it's the local experience. The garden seating fills up when a good band is playing, so arrive by 7:30 PM if you want a table near the stage. Check whether a band is scheduled before going; acoustic nights are better than the louder cover acts.
Full Review
Lao Lao Garden sits behind a gate just off the main drag, and the garden setting immediately separates it from the shophouse bars lining Sisavangvong Road. Mature trees shade the courtyard during the day; at night, string lights and the stage lighting create a warm glow. Tables scatter across the uneven ground, some under cover, most open to the sky.
The live music is the main draw and the main variable. Good nights feature a tight cover band that reads the crowd and keeps energy high. Bad nights feature an enthusiastic but rough group that struggles with sound levels. Either way, the crowd tends to forgive because the drinks are cheap and the setting is pleasant. The stage faces the main seating area, and tables within 10 meters get the full volume.
Lao Lao whiskey is the house specialty. Served in shot glasses for 10,000 to 15,000 LAK, it's a clear rice spirit that ranges from smooth to fiery depending on the batch. Mixed with lime and soda, it makes a cocktail that costs less than a dollar and tastes better than it should. Food runs the standard tourist menu: fried rice, spring rolls, grilled meats, and a few Lao specialties. Quality is consistent if unspectacular.
The backpacker crowd makes this bar one of the easiest places to socialize in town. People sit at shared tables, buy each other shots, and make plans for the bowling alley or the next day's activities. Solo travelers will find conversation here faster than anywhere else in Luang Prabang.
Closes at 11:30 PM with everything else. The transition to the bowling alley happens naturally as the band finishes their last set and tuk-tuks materialize outside.
