Cantina Social

Metaxourgeio, Athens

Cantina Social sits on Leonidou Street in Metaxourgeio, occupying a ground-floor space where the exterior walls carry rotating murals from the neighborhood's active street-art scene. The interior runs intentionally rough: mismatched wooden chairs, vinyl-covered tables, old travel posters on the walls, and a bar counter that looks assembled from scavenged materials rather than purpose-built. The venue pulls a distinctive crowd mixing art students from the nearby Athens School of Fine Arts, local workers from the surrounding industrial conversions, and a rotating cast of musicians and creatives who treat the bar as a neighborhood living room. The drinks program centers on affordable beer including a rotating selection of Greek craft brews from breweries like Noctua, Septem, and Solo, alongside basic cocktails and shots that run cheaper than anywhere in Gazi or Psyri. A small kitchen serves tacos and Tex-Mex plates until midnight, which makes the venue a viable dinner stop as well as a drinks destination. Music runs on a house playlist rather than a DJ, with volume kept conversational until late in the evening when the energy naturally climbs. The atmosphere rewards time spent; this is not a venue for a quick drink but a place to settle in across several hours.

Insider Tip

Full Review

Cantina Social reads correctly from the street. The murals on the exterior shift every few months as local artists cycle through, and the painted lettering on the door looks hand-done rather than professionally signed. Walking in, the floor is uneven in places, the chairs don't match, and the wall decoration is a collage of posters, stickers, and found objects that have accumulated rather than been curated.

I visited on a Wednesday evening in March. The outdoor tables on Leonidou were nearly full despite the cooler weather, and the indoor room held a mix of students sharing pitchers, a couple working on laptops with beers, and three older regulars at the bar reading newspapers. The draft selection on rotation included two Greek craft lagers and a stout from Septem brewery, all priced in the 5 EUR range which runs cheaper than comparable selections in more central neighborhoods.

The tacos are not authentic Mexican in the strict sense but they're honestly done and filling. Three tacos and two beers came in under 20 EUR, which is a rare price point for central Athens nightlife. Service runs counter-style with food brought to tables, and the kitchen turnaround stays fast even when the room is busy.

Against other Metaxourgeio and surrounding options, Cantina Social occupies a specific niche: the artsy-but-unpretentious neighborhood bar that prioritizes affordability and atmosphere over polish. Six Underground nearby operates at a more serious cocktail tier, Revolt targets a specific underground music audience, and Cantina fills the accessible-everyday slot that most neighborhoods need. For a traveler working through Metaxourgeio as a district, this is the right first stop.

The neighborhood has shifted over the past decade as Athens' housing market has pushed creatives out of central areas. Metaxourgeio and the adjacent Kerameikos zone absorbed a lot of that migration, which is why the bar scene here has a different texture than the more commercial Gazi strip a few blocks south.

The Neighborhood

Cantina Social sits on Leonidou Street in Metaxourgeio, one of central Athens' more transitional neighborhoods where industrial conversions, migrant-run shops, artist studios, and new cafes coexist. The Athens School of Fine Arts is within walking distance, which shapes the local crowd composition.
