Metaxourgeio, Athens

Romantso occupies a former printing house at Anaxagora 3-5, operating as a creative hub that combines a bar, event space, co-working area, and occasional gallery. The ground floor opens into a courtyard that fills with locals on warm evenings, drinking craft beer and eating from a rotating food menu. Live music nights feature Greek indie, electronic, and experimental acts on a small stage inside. The space hosts regular workshops, markets, and cultural events that draw a diverse crowd beyond the typical nightlife demographic. Drinks are affordable by Athens standards, with craft beer at EUR 4 to 6 and cocktails at EUR 7 to 9. No cover charge for regular bar nights; ticketed events range from EUR 5 to 15. The crowd is young, creative, and local, with a strong university student presence. The interior retains industrial elements from the building's printing house days, including original signage and machinery parts repurposed as decoration. Weekend nights get busy after 10 PM, and the courtyard becomes standing room only by midnight in summer. Food options are limited but decent, with bar snacks and occasionally a pop-up kitchen serving Greek street food.

What to Expect

Walk through the entrance into a courtyard ringed by the old building's walls. The bar is to one side, seating scattered throughout. Inside, the space opens up with high ceilings and the stage at the back. The energy is relaxed early and picks up as the evening progresses. On live music nights, the indoor space gets loud and packed.

Full Review

Romantso represents the best of Athens' creative repurposing movement. The former printing house has been transformed without losing its industrial soul. Original machinery, old typefaces, and printing equipment dot the space, giving it a museum quality that coexists comfortably with the bar and event programming.

The courtyard is the social heart of the venue. On a warm evening, it fills with a mix of students, artists, and Metaxourgeio locals who treat it as an extension of their living rooms. Conversations flow easily here, and the lack of loud music in the outdoor area makes it genuinely social. The craft beer selection is better than you'd expect, with several Greek microbreweries represented on tap.

Live music nights inside are a different experience. The room isn't acoustically designed for performances, but the intimacy of the space compensates. I caught a Greek electronic act here that would have felt distant in a larger venue but connected directly in Romantso's tight indoor stage area. The sound can get boomy on the low end, but for the scale of the shows they book, it works.

The main limitation is consistency. Because Romantso runs as a creative hub first and a bar second, some nights are packed with energy and others feel quiet and understaffed. Checking the schedule before going makes a real difference in the experience you'll have.

The Neighborhood

Romantso is in Metaxourgeio, a neighborhood that has shifted from rough to interesting over the past decade. The surrounding streets mix residential buildings with small galleries, studios, and a handful of other bars. It's a 15-minute walk from the tourist center but feels much further from the tourist trail.

Getting There

Metaxourgeio metro (Line 2) is a 3-minute walk. Exit the station and head south on Anaxagora Street. The venue is clearly marked. Taxis from Monastiraki take 5 minutes.
