Terrasse Nelligan
Terrasse Nelligan is the rooftop bar atop Hotel Nelligan at 106 Rue Saint-Paul West, offering what may be the best open-air views in Old Montreal. The terrace operates seasonally from May through October, with a capacity of around 120 spread across tables and lounge seating. The view takes in the Notre-Dame Basilica, the Old Port, and the rooftops of the surrounding heritage district. The drink menu keeps things straightforward: classic cocktails, a wine list emphasizing French and Quebec selections, and a small beer list. Food is available from a seasonal menu focused on shareable plates. The terrace fills on sunny afternoons and stays busy through the evening on warm nights. No DJ, no dancing; the appeal is entirely about the setting and the view. Winter closure is total; the terrace is inaccessible and the hotel's ground-floor restaurant operates independently during cold months.

Full Review
Terrasse Nelligan sells one thing: the view. And the view delivers.
The rooftop at Hotel Nelligan sits at just the right height to take in Old Montreal's architectural character without being so high that the details blur. The Notre-Dame Basilica rises to the east, close enough to appreciate the stonework. The Old Port and river spread south. The grey stone rooftops of the heritage district fill the foreground with a texture that looks European from above.
The terrace itself is well-maintained without being overdesigned. Tables and chairs in clean lines, some lounge seating along the edges, and enough plantings to soften the rooftop without blocking views. The capacity is manageable; at 120 seats, it fills but doesn't become overwhelming. The staff is hotel-trained and attentive without hovering.
The drinks are competent but not the draw. Classic cocktails are made correctly, and the wine list has enough depth to satisfy most preferences. Prices are at the top of the Old Montreal range, which is expected for a rooftop hotel bar. Nobody comes here because the gin and tonic is life-changing; they come because drinking a gin and tonic while looking at 18th-century architecture in the open air is its own reward.
The main challenge is access. No reservations means that prime-time arrival, roughly 5 PM to 7 PM on summer weekends, often means waiting. The terrace staff manages a loose queue, but there's no formal system. Arriving earlier or later avoids the worst of it. Midweek visits are more relaxed and offer the same view with half the crowd.
The seasonal limitation is significant. Five months of operation means Terrasse Nelligan doesn't exist as a nightlife option for most of the year. But during those five months, particularly on warm evenings when the sun sets over the river, it's hard to beat.
