Pivbar
Pivbar is Podil's no-frills craft beer destination, tucked into Verkhnii Val Street with a rotating selection of Ukrainian and European beers on tap. The space is compact: wooden tables, bench seating, and a bar lined with tap handles. Capacity is around 40 people. The beer list typically features 12-16 taps, weighted toward Ukrainian craft breweries like Varvar, Pravda, and Syndicate, with a few European guest taps. A pint costs UAH 60-130 depending on the brew. The food menu is minimal: boards of dried fish, sausage, and bread, the kind of snacks designed to keep you drinking. The crowd is local and unpretentious: students, young professionals, beer enthusiasts who know what they're ordering. No cover, no fuss, no cocktails.
What to Expect
A small, friendly beer bar where the focus is entirely on what's in your glass. The atmosphere is communal; the bench seating means you'll be close to your neighbors and conversations happen naturally. The bartender knows every tap and will guide you if you're unfamiliar with Ukrainian craft beer.
Unpretentious, warm, and beer-focused. The kind of bar where regulars greet the bartender by name.
Indie rock, alternative, lo-fi hip-hop. Volume stays background-level.
Completely casual. This is a beer bar, not a cocktail lounge.

Insider Tip
Ask the bartender which Ukrainian craft beers are fresh on tap. Varvar's IPAs and Pravda's seasonal releases are highlights. Grab a seat at the window for people-watching on Verkhnii Val. The dried fish board (sushenaya ryba) is the best pairing for hop-forward beers.
Full Review
Pivbar does one thing well: it serves good beer in a comfortable room. The space is small enough that you feel the energy of every table, which means a half-full room already feels lively. The wooden interior absorbs sound nicely, keeping the volume at a level where you can talk without raising your voice.
The tap list rewards exploration. Ukrainian craft brewing has matured enormously in the past decade, and Pivbar showcases that growth. Varvar's rotating IPAs are consistently strong. Pravda (the Lviv brewery) sends special releases that sell out fast. The European guest taps usually include something Belgian or German as a palate cleanser. The bartender will pour tasters if you ask.
The dried fish boards are an acquired taste for foreigners but an absolutely standard Ukrainian beer snack. Salty, chewy, and designed to make you order another round. The sausage board is the safer option for the uninitiated.
The crowd is predominantly Ukrainian, mostly in their 20s and 30s, with the occasional expat or tourist who found the place through word of mouth. English works with staff but most patron conversation happens in Ukrainian. That's part of the charm. You're in a local bar, not a tourist trap.
The Neighborhood
Verkhnii Val runs parallel to Sahaidachnoho Street, one block uphill. The street is quieter and more residential, giving Pivbar a neighborhood bar feeling despite being a five-minute walk from Kontraktova Square. Barman Dictat is around the corner on Khoryva Street.
Getting There
From Kontraktova Ploscha metro, walk north on Khoryva and turn right onto Verkhnii Val. Pivbar is about a five-minute walk. Alternatively, walk up from Sahaidachnoho Street via any of the connecting alleys.
