Parovoz Speak Easy
Parovoz Speak Easy hides behind an unmarked door on Sahaidachnoho Street in Podil, following the classic speakeasy format that has swept cocktail bars worldwide. The entrance requires a bit of searching; look for a small train symbol (parovoz means locomotive in Ukrainian) near a nondescript metal door. Inside, the space seats roughly 35 people across a narrow room with a long bar, exposed brick walls, and dim amber lighting. The bartenders are the draw. They run a rotating menu of original cocktails alongside a strong classics repertoire, and they're happy to create something off-menu based on your preferences. Cocktails cost UAH 200-350, putting Parovoz at the upper end of Podil's bar prices but well below comparable bars in Western European capitals. The atmosphere is conversational rather than party-oriented. This is where you go for two excellent drinks before dinner, not for a rowdy night.
What to Expect
Finding the door is part of the experience. Once inside, you're in a narrow, warmly lit room where the bartender's workspace dominates the center. The music is low enough for conversation. Drinks arrive with minimal fuss but maximum attention to detail. It feels like a secret you've been let in on.
Intimate, sophisticated, unhurried. The kind of bar where you talk to the person next to you because the room demands it.
Low-volume jazz, soul, and lo-fi. Background music, never the focus.
Smart casual. The speakeasy crowd tends to dress a notch above average Podil bar attire. Clean shoes, a decent shirt.
Cocktail enthusiasts, couples, and anyone who wants quality drinks in an intimate setting without loud music.
Cards and cash accepted. UAH only.

Insider Tip
Reserve a spot on Friday or Saturday through their Instagram DM. Ask the bartender for their recommendation rather than ordering from the menu; the off-menu creations are often better. The seats at the bar are the best spots for watching the craft. Arrive before 8 PM for a guaranteed seat.
Full Review
The search for the entrance is a pleasant ritual on Sahaidachnoho Street. You pass shopfronts and restaurants until you spot the small train emblem and pull open a heavy door. A short staircase descends into a room that seats maybe 35 people at capacity, split between the bar, a few small tables, and a leather bench along the wall.
The bartenders define the experience. They work with precision and obvious pride, building each drink with measured pours and fresh ingredients. The menu rotates seasonally, but I've found the off-menu requests yield the best results. Tell them what flavors you like and let them work. A smoked old fashioned variation they made on request was one of the better cocktails I've had in Eastern Europe.
The crowd is mixed: creative professionals, young couples, the occasional tourist who did their research. Conversation flows naturally in the tight space. English works fine with the bar staff. The lighting keeps things flattering without being so dark you can't see your drink.
Compared to Barman Dictat up the road, Parovoz is smaller, quieter, and more focused on the speakeasy experience. Barman Dictat has more seats and a louder energy. Both are excellent, but Parovoz wins for a slower, more intentional evening.
The Neighborhood
Parovoz sits on Sahaidachnoho Street, Podil's main commercial artery. Within a two-minute walk you'll find restaurants, cafes, and other bars. Barman Dictat is about five minutes north on Khoryva Street. Closer is a ten-minute walk northwest.
Getting There
Kontraktova Ploscha metro (Green Line) is a three-minute walk. Exit toward Sahaidachnoho Street and head southeast. The bar is on the left side, marked only by the small locomotive symbol.
