Sala Equis
Sala Equis occupies what was, for decades, one of central Madrid's last operating adult cinemas. The 2017 renovation stripped the space back to its bones, kept the original projection booth and rows of theater seating, and added a full bar, a small food menu, and a programming schedule that blends film screenings, DJ sets, and live music. The main room still looks like a cinema, with raked seating facing a screen that plays vintage films, short programs, and occasional feature screenings. A smaller side room operates as a more conventional cocktail bar. The courtyard terrace out front, covered by a retractable roof, holds the overflow and adds open-air seating in good weather. The crowd skews mid-30s Madrileños, graphic designers, film people, and a regular contingent of visitors who saw the space on Instagram. Drinks are reasonably priced for the location (cañas at 3 EUR, cocktails at 9 to 11), which keeps it accessible as a neighborhood bar rather than a destination venue.
What to Expect
Theater seats facing a screen running vintage films at low volume, a bar crowd standing along the back rail, conversation competing with film audio, and a space that somehow works as both a cinema and a bar at the same time.
Repurposed cinema with a design-forward but unpretentious feel. Quiet enough for conversation early, louder after midnight.
Indie, electronic, jazz, soul, and film soundtracks depending on the night
Casual to smart casual. Fits the design-forward Madrileño crowd.
Travelers who like design-led spaces and want something different from standard Madrid bars

Insider Tip
Sit in the main theater room for the full effect; the screenings rotate but the seating itself is the draw. Weekend evenings fill the courtyard terrace first; try the cinema room for more space. Check the events calendar; some nights have DJs and a cover, others are open-entry bar.
Full Review
Sala Equis sits in a covered courtyard on Calle del Duque de Alba, between La Latina and Plaza Mayor. The building's history as an adult cinema remains visible everywhere: the original screen, the raked seating, the projection booth, and the marquee-style signage survived the renovation. The team behind the space (a group of Madrid designers and restaurateurs) made the decision to treat the cinema past as the main design feature rather than hiding it, which sets Sala Equis apart from the many repurposed Madrid venues that erase their previous identities.
The main room is the draw. Rows of theater seats face a full-size screen that runs rotating programs: silent films, short programs, music videos, and on some nights curated feature screenings. The audio stays low enough that the room functions as a bar first and a cinema second, but loud enough that the film feels present. Drinks are ordered at a bar at the back of the theater or from circulating staff. Sitting through a full drink while a Buster Keaton film plays on the screen is a reliably strange Madrid experience.
The courtyard terrace is the more conventional bar space, covered by a retractable glass roof and surrounded by brick walls with ambient plants. It handles the overflow on busy nights and is the preferred spot for people who want to talk without film audio in the background. The side room, smaller and darker, operates as a cocktail-focused space with a more detailed drinks menu.
Programming expands on most weekends to include DJs, live music, and occasional themed nights. The cover charge, when applied, runs 5 to 10 EUR and the bar stays open until 02:30. Compared to other design-led Madrid venues (Casa Suecia's rooftop, Matadero's cultural complex, Ojalá in Malasaña), Sala Equis is the most central and the most concept-driven. The concept is also the main limitation: if you don't find the cinema premise interesting, the drinks and food are fine but don't justify a special trip.
The Neighborhood
Sala Equis is on Calle del Duque de Alba, a short street between La Latina and the Plaza Mayor area. The surrounding streets mix traditional tapas bars with newer design-focused venues, and both El Rastro (Sunday) and Plaza Mayor are within a five-minute walk.
