Picalagartos Sky Bar

Gran Vía, Madrid

Picalagartos Sky Bar occupies the top floor of the NH Collection Gran Vía hotel at Callao, offering 360-degree views across central Madrid. The Callao plaza below is one of the busiest intersections in the city, and the view from Picalagartos captures Gran Vía's illuminated facades, the Plaza Mayor district, and on clear days the distant outlines of the Guadarrama mountains. The bar has two distinct zones: an indoor lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows used year-round, and an open-air terrace that operates in warm months with standing cocktails and seated tables. Cocktails run 12 to 16 EUR, the wine list focuses on Spanish bottles, and a short food menu offers tapas-style plates for 8 to 14 EUR. The dress code leans toward smart casual, with the bar discouraging sportswear and flip-flops. Reservations are necessary on weekends and during sunset hours; walk-ins at 19:00 on a Saturday will usually be turned away.

What to Expect

The hum of Gran Vía traffic far below, an indoor lounge with low lighting and upholstered seating, a terrace where dozens of tables angle toward the best views, and a crowd that mixes hotel guests with Madrileños celebrating something.

Hotel rooftop polish with a proper view as the headline feature.

Smart casual enforced. No shorts, no flip-flops, no athletic wear. Madrid cocktail-bar standard.

Hours

Insider Tip

Book a table on the terrace at least three days ahead for sunset; the window between 20:30 and 21:30 (depending on season) is the most popular and fills first. The dress code is enforced more strictly on weekends; avoid shorts and sneakers if you want to sit on the terrace. Cocktails are fine but not the reason to come; pay for the view.

Full Review

Picalagartos sits on the top floor of the NH Collection Gran Vía, a mid-scale business hotel directly at Callao. The building's position gives the bar one of the best sightlines in central Madrid: Gran Vía stretches east and west, the Plaza Mayor rooftops are visible to the south, and on the northwest horizon the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral catch afternoon light. In summer the open-air terrace is the main draw; in winter the indoor lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows retains most of the view and stays comfortable in bad weather.

The bar program is competent rather than exceptional. Cocktails follow international trends with Spanish touches: a sherry-based Negroni, a gin and tonic with rosemary and cardamom, a mezcal margarita with smoked salt rim. Execution is consistent, but the drinks are not why people come. The wine list does better, with a short selection of Spanish bottles and glasses covering Albariño, Godello, Tempranillo, and a few unusual picks from smaller producers.

Food is served as small plates designed for sharing: jamón ibérico, croquetas, patatas bravas, and a short list of more elaborate items like tuna tartare and grilled octopus. Portions are small for the price, again reflecting the hotel rooftop pricing model. Most visitors order one plate alongside cocktails rather than building a proper meal.

Compared to Madrid's other hotel rooftops (Azotea del Círculo de Bellas Artes, Dear Hotel's Nice to Meet You, Ginkgo at the VP Plaza España), Picalagartos has the most direct Gran Vía view and the strongest sunset angle. Azotea del Círculo has better architectural character and a 5 EUR entry that filters the crowd differently. Nice to Meet You has a better cocktail program. Picalagartos wins on the view and the convenience of the Callao location. Sunday afternoons in warm months are the busiest period; weeknights in winter are the most relaxed visit.
