Gran Vía, Madrid

Teatro Kapital is Madrid's mega-club, spread across seven floors of a former theater near Atocha station. Each floor plays a different genre: the main room handles commercial pop and dance hits, another floor does hip-hop and reggaeton, one runs techno, there's an R&B room, a cinema screening music videos, a karaoke floor, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic city views. The sheer variety means there's something for everyone, which is exactly the point. Entry runs EUR 15-20 and usually includes a drink. Additional drinks are EUR 8-12 for cocktails and EUR 6-8 for beer. The venue fills from about 2 AM on weekends and doesn't empty until 6 AM. The crowd is young, international, and mixed between tourists and locals. The dress code is relaxed but they'll turn away people in athletic wear. Each floor has its own bar, and the elevators and staircases between levels become social zones in themselves. The rooftop terrace is the highlight for many, offering fresh air and a view of Madrid's skyline between dance floor sessions.

What to Expect

Seven floors of different music in a former theater. You'll ride elevators between hip-hop, techno, pop, and everything else. The main floor is the most crowded. The rooftop terrace is the best spot for a break. It's big, loud, and very much a tourist-friendly megaclub.

Atmosphere

Massive, varied, and international. More theme park than underground club, and that's fine.

Start at the rooftop terrace for the view, then work your way down. The techno floor is the least crowded and has the best music. Don't arrive before 1:30 AM; it's empty before then. Guest list sign-ups online sometimes get you discounted entry.

Full Review

Teatro Kapital doesn't pretend to be cool. It's a seven-floor entertainment complex that offers quantity alongside reasonable quality, and for a certain kind of night out, that's exactly right. The former theater's architecture gives the main room dramatic proportions, with the original stage area converted to a massive dance floor and DJ booth.

Moving between floors is part of the experience. You'll ride an elevator from reggaeton to techno, which is disorienting in the best way. The techno floor is surprisingly decent, playing proper electronic music to a smaller, more focused crowd. The hip-hop room draws the biggest second-floor audience. The cinema room is bizarre: people sit watching music videos while resting their feet.

The rooftop terrace is genuinely great. Cold air, city views, a bar, and room to breathe after the packed floors below. I spent as much time up there as on any dance floor. The crowd up top is friendlier and more conversational than inside.

The main weakness is that none of the seven floors do anything exceptionally well. The techno won't satisfy a serious techno head. The hip-hop playlist is safe. The pop floor is exactly what you'd expect. But for a group of five people with different tastes, Kapital solves the impossible problem of choosing a venue everyone agrees on.
