Azotea del Circulo

The Círculo de Bellas Artes is a 1926 cultural building on the corner of Alcalá and Gran Vía, designed by Antonio Palacios in a late-Beaux Arts style that still stands out on a street mostly defined by early-20th-century construction. The rooftop terrace, opened in its current form in the early 2000s, has become one of the most photographed spots in central Madrid thanks to both the view and the building's architecture. A 5 EUR entry fee, paid at the ground-floor ticket counter or in advance online, grants access via an elevator that runs straight to the top floor.

The terrace is arranged on three descending levels connected by short stairs. The topmost level holds the bar and a handful of seated tables, with the clearest sight lines in all directions. The middle level has lounge-style seating around sculptural installations. The lowest level runs along the building's front facade with views directly down Gran Vía. Each level has its own character, and walking between them is part of the experience.

The drinks menu covers standard cocktails at mid-premium prices. The cocktails themselves are competent rather than innovative: gin and tonics built with several gin options, a handful of tropical-leaning drinks, a few classic builds. Wine by the glass covers Spanish regions with no surprises. Beer and light tapas fill out the menu. Service can be slow during sunset hours when the rooftop hits capacity.

Compared to Madrid's other central rooftops, Azotea del Círculo has the strongest architectural character and the most 360-degree view. Picalagartos Sky Bar has better sight lines west to the Royal Palace and a hotel-polished experience. Dear Hotel rooftop (Nice to Meet You) has better cocktails. The Círculo's 5 EUR entry is unique among Madrid rooftops and filters the crowd differently: you get fewer casual walk-ins and more people who actually came for the view.

Sunset timing varies with the season: 21:30 in summer, 17:30 in winter. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before to secure a standing position near the rail or a seated table. Photography conditions are best at the tail end of sunset when Gran Vía's lights come on while the western sky still holds color. The rooftop closes earlier on weekdays; check hours before planning a late visit.
