Cosa Nostra

Gulberg, Lahore

Cosa Nostra is MM Alam Road's Italian answer to Cafe Aylanto's Mediterranean ambitions, a restaurant that has built a devoted following among Lahore's young professional class. The space on MM Alam Road in Gulberg III features a ground-floor dining room with a wood-fired pizza oven visible from the main seating area, and an outdoor terrace that fills on pleasant evenings. Total capacity is about 70. The menu focuses on Italian cuisine adapted with awareness of Pakistani tastes: wood-fired pizzas, pasta dishes, risottos, and Italian-style grilled meats. The pizza, made in the prominently displayed oven, is genuinely good and serves as the restaurant's signature. Mains run PKR 1,200-3,000. No alcohol. Fresh juices, imported Italian sodas, and specialty teas complement the food. The crowd skews younger than Aylanto, with professionals in their mid-20s to mid-30s dominating the evening tables. Groups of friends and couples make up most of the clientele. Thursday evening is again the peak, with the terrace hosting animated groups who come for the food, stay for the conversation, and order shisha to extend the evening. The atmosphere is social and energetic without Aylanto's see-and-be-seen intensity.

Full Review

Cosa Nostra fills a specific gap on MM Alam Road: excellent food in a social setting without the social pressure of Aylanto. The restaurant's focus on Italian cuisine, executed through a genuine wood-fired pizza oven, gives it a culinary identity that distinguishes it from the broader menus of neighboring establishments.

The interior places the pizza oven as a visual centerpiece, visible from most dining tables through an open kitchen arrangement. The heat and flame of the oven create theater as pizzas slide in and emerge charred and bubbling. The dining room seats about 45, with warm lighting, rustic Italian touches (olive oil bottles as table decoration, Italian music), and comfortable spacing.

The terrace adds another 25 seats and, on evenings between October and March, is the preferred location. The view is of MM Alam Road's traffic and pedestrians, which during peak hours provides its own entertainment.

The pizza is Cosa Nostra's argument for existence. The margherita (PKR 1,000) uses properly made dough, fresh mozzarella (imported or locally sourced depending on availability), and a tomato sauce that balances sweetness and acidity. The quattro formaggi and prosciutto options extend the range. At their best, these pizzas compete with decent pizzerias anywhere in the world. Pasta dishes (PKR 1,200-2,500) are competent: carbonara, arrabbiata, and pesto prepared with proper technique. Italian-style grilled meats (PKR 1,500-3,000) round out the menu.

The crowd on Thursday evening is predominantly young professional: men and women in their late 20s and early 30s, most educated abroad, many working in the growing corporate and startup sectors of Lahore's economy. The gender mix is more balanced than many Pakistani social venues, reflecting the progressive pocket of society that MM Alam Road attracts. Groups of friends share pizzas and shisha. Couples take corner tables.

Shisha service (PKR 800-1,500) extends evenings beyond dinner. Groups that arrive at 8:30 PM for food are still seated at 11 PM, the hookah keeping the social momentum going. Non-alcoholic drinks include freshly squeezed juices, Italian sodas (Sanpellegrino), and teas.

Cosa Nostra is where you go when you want the social energy of MM Alam Road's Thursday night without the social stratification of Aylanto. The food is better focused, the crowd is more relaxed, and the atmosphere prioritizes enjoyment over performance.
