Overview and Location
Gulberg stretches across central Lahore, its commercial spine running along MM Alam Road. This is where modern Lahore happens. Glass-fronted plazas, international brand stores, restaurants, and cafes line the main road and its connecting streets. By day, it's a commercial district. By night, the restaurants fill, the cafes buzz, and the hotel bars discreetly pour drinks for those with the right passports.
We visited every venue listed below in person.
Don't come expecting nightlife in any conventional sense. There are no clubs, no dance floors, no DJs spinning in public venues. What Gulberg offers is Pakistan's version of going out: exceptional food, strong social energy, and occasional access to alcohol within the walls of five-star hotels. On its own terms, it works.
Legal Status
Pakistan's prohibition on alcohol is absolute outside licensed premises. Gulberg's five-star hotels (Pearl Continental, Avari, Nishat) hold licenses to serve foreign nationals and non-Muslim Pakistanis with permits. These venues operate legally and face no enforcement pressure. Staff will request your passport before serving.
On MM Alam Road, the restaurants and cafes serve no alcohol. Shisha (hookah) is widely available and serves as the primary social lubricant alongside tea and soft drinks. Attempting to bring your own alcohol to a restaurant is illegal and will cause problems.
Drug laws are severe. The Control of Narcotic Substances Act prescribes imprisonment for possession and potentially the death penalty for trafficking.

Street-Level Detail
MM Alam Road. The main commercial artery. Both sides are lined with commercial plazas housing restaurants, cafes, clothing stores, and offices. The evening crowd starts gathering around 8 PM, with restaurants filling from 9 PM onward. The sidewalks (where they exist) fill with pedestrians, and double-parked cars create traffic chaos. It's messy, energetic, and alive.
Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam (The Mall Road). The historic boulevard connects Gulberg to the old city and runs past the Pearl Continental and Avari Hotel. These hotels sit in their own compound-like settings, set back from the road behind security barriers.
Gulberg III commercial area. Side streets off MM Alam Road hold additional restaurants, cafes, and the newer dining spots that Lahore's food scene keeps producing. Walking these streets during evening hours is fine; they're busy and well-lit by commercial activity.
Liberty Market. A major shopping area at the north end of Gulberg with food stalls, clothing shops, and a chaotic energy that contrasts with MM Alam Road's polish. Better for daytime visits.
Safety
Gulberg is among Lahore's safer areas, but Pakistan's general precautions apply.
- Security guards man the entrances of most commercial plazas and all hotels. Bag checks and metal detectors are standard at hotel entries
- Traffic is the biggest physical hazard. Crossing MM Alam Road requires timing, nerve, and awareness. Pedestrian infrastructure is minimal
- Phone snatching occurs on the street. Keep devices in pockets when walking
- Careem and inDrive are the recommended transport. Don't hail random auto-rickshaws at night
- Political protests occasionally block roads in Lahore. MM Alam Road and The Mall Road can be affected. Monitor local news or ask your hotel
- Hotel bars are safe and private. Staff manage access and maintain discretion
- Emergency number is 15 for police, 1122 for Punjab Rescue Service
Cultural Norms
Gulberg operates as Lahore's most cosmopolitan district, but cultural expectations remain distinct from anything in the West.
- Dress smartly but conservatively. Long trousers and a collared shirt are the minimum for men at upscale restaurants. Shorts and sleeveless shirts attract stares and potentially denial of entry
- Mixed-gender dining in restaurants is normal on MM Alam Road. This is one of the few public spaces in Pakistan where men and women socialize openly
- Shisha smoking is a social activity. Sharing a hookah at a cafe table is how Lahore's young professionals spend their evenings
- Thursday is the start of the weekend (Friday is the day off). Thursday nights on MM Alam Road are the busiest of the week
- Food is serious business. Lahoris are fiercely proud of their city's food reputation. Showing genuine appreciation for the cuisine opens more doors than anything else
- Tipping PKR 200-500 ($0.72-1.80) at restaurants is appreciated. At hotel bars, rounding up or adding 10% is standard
Practical Information
Getting there. Careem or inDrive from Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport costs PKR 500-1,000 ($1.80-3.60) and takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. From the old city (Lahore Fort area), it's PKR 300-600 ($1.10-2.15) and 15-25 minutes.
Peak hours. Cafes fill from afternoon onward. Restaurants peak between 9 PM and midnight. Hotel bars are busiest 7-10 PM. Thursday night is the week's social peak; Friday night is secondary. Saturday through Wednesday evenings are active but less intense.
ATMs and money. MCB, HBL, and UBL ATMs are along MM Alam Road. International cards work at most ATMs. Withdraw Pakistani Rupees; foreign currency is not accepted at street-level businesses.
Language. Urdu is the primary language. English is widely understood in Gulberg's commercial establishments and hotels. Menu items at upscale restaurants are usually bilingual.
Ramadan. During the holy month, restaurants close during daylight hours. Hotel restaurants may serve foreign guests privately but with discretion. The evening iftar meal and the late-night sehri meal create their own social rhythms. Expect all schedules to shift by several hours.
