Yul's
Yul's is a beach-adjacent bar and grill near Bamburi Beach that captures the coastal vibe without tourist-trap pricing. The setup is open-air: a covered bar area, scattered tables under makuti (palm thatch) roofing, and a grill turning out seafood and nyama choma. A cold Tusker beer costs KES 200-350 ($1.50-2.60). Grilled fish runs KES 400-800 ($3-6), and a plate of prawns with chips costs KES 600-1,000 ($4.50-7.50). The crowd mixes Mombasa locals spending their evening with tourists from nearby hotels. Music plays from speakers but rarely overwhelms conversation. The bar is busiest on weekend evenings and during the December-March tourist peak.

Relaxed, salty, and real. The opposite of a curated Instagram venue.

Insider Tip
Order the grilled fish; it comes straight from the morning catch at Bamburi. The prawns are seasonal but excellent when available. Come before sunset for the best combination of light, breeze, and atmosphere. Don't walk to the beach after dark, even though it's right there. Use the venue's security guard to call a tuk-tuk when leaving.
Full Review
Yul's sits in the transition zone between the road and Bamburi Beach, occupying a plot of sandy ground with makuti-roofed structures providing shade. The Indian Ocean is audible from most tables, and on clear evenings the horizon line sits at the edge of your vision. It's not a beach bar in the manicured resort sense; it's a bar near the beach, and the distinction matters.
The grill is the operation's heart. A charcoal setup produces grilled tilapia, red snapper, prawns, chicken, and nyama choma throughout the day and evening. The fish is the star: whole grilled with a chili and lime marinade, served with ugali and kachumbari. It's the kind of simple, honest cooking that expensive restaurants try to replicate and rarely match. Prices are fair. A full meal with a couple of beers rarely exceeds KES 1,000-1,500 ($7.50-11.25) per person.
Beer is the drink of choice. Tusker, White Cap, and Pilsner lager come cold from a chest cooler. Imported beer is available at a markup. Spirits are standard Kenyan brands. There's no cocktail menu; this isn't that kind of place.
The crowd shifts through the day. Lunch draws families and hotel guests. Late afternoon brings the sunset seekers. Evening is when the social atmosphere peaks, with groups of friends and couples settling in for long sessions. The music stays in the background: reggae, bongo flava, and coastal Swahili pop from a speaker behind the bar.
The staff know their regulars and treat newcomers as potential regulars. Service is warm but runs on coastal time. Rushing your order or demanding speed will get you nowhere. Relax into it.
Safety requires attention. The beach directly adjacent to Yul's is not safe after dark. Do not walk down to the sand at night. The bar itself is reasonably secure, with a perimeter and a guard. When leaving, ask the staff to arrange a tuk-tuk rather than walking to the road to flag one down.
