Tapas Cielo
Tapas Cielo sits on the top floor of Nyali CityMall, a rooftop restaurant and bar that catches the Indian Ocean breeze and offers views over Mombasa's north coast. The venue combines Spanish-inspired tapas with a cocktail bar and a sunset crowd that arrives from late afternoon. Cocktails cost KES 600-1,200 ($4.50-9), wine KES 500-900 ($3.75-6.75) per glass, and beer KES 300-500 ($2.25-3.75). The tapas menu features seafood-heavy small plates alongside Mediterranean standards. Live music plays on weekend evenings, typically acoustic or jazz acts suited to the rooftop setting. The crowd is a mix of Mombasa professionals, hotel tourists, and Nairobi visitors on coastal weekends.

Insider Tip
Arrive by 5 PM for the sunset. The ocean-facing tables fill fast. The seafood tapas are the kitchen's strength; skip the pasta dishes. The house sangria is generous and well-made. Thursday evenings are quieter and feel more intimate than the weekend crowd.
Full Review
Tapas Cielo is the closest Mombasa gets to a Nairobi-quality cocktail bar, and the ocean setting gives it an advantage no Nairobi rooftop can match. The space is well-designed: an open terrace with a retractable roof for rain, a long bar counter, and tables arranged to maximize the view. The Indian Ocean stretches to the horizon on one side, and the lights of Nyali spread out on the other.
The tapas menu takes the concept seriously. Grilled octopus, prawn skewers, patatas bravas, and a seafood platter that uses the coast's fresh catch are all worth ordering. The kitchen has a Spanish-trained chef who understands that tapas are about quality in small quantities rather than miniature main courses. Not everything works (the meat dishes are less impressive than the seafood), but the hits outnumber the misses.
Cocktails are the drink focus. The bartenders have clearly been trained and take pride in presentation. Classic cocktails are well-executed, and the house specials incorporate tropical fruits that make sense on the coast. The sangria pitcher is a popular table order and is genuinely good. The wine list has reasonable options from South Africa and Europe.
The crowd splits by time. Late-afternoon arrivals come for sunset and tend to be couples and small groups seeking a romantic or relaxed start to the evening. After 8 PM, the energy picks up slightly as groups arrive for dinner and drinks. Weekend live music adds atmosphere without turning the venue into a performance space.
Service is attentive by Mombasa standards, which means better than most beach bars but with occasional lapses when the terrace fills. Patience helps.
The CityMall location provides practical benefits: parking, security, ATMs, and easy taxi access. The mall itself closes before the bar, so the surrounding area quiets down. Use Bolt or a tuk-tuk to leave.
The Neighborhood
Nyali CityMall is on Links Road, the main commercial street of Nyali. The mall has shops, supermarkets, and other restaurants at ground level. The surrounding area is well-lit and commercially active during business hours.
Getting There
From Mombasa Old Town, a tuk-tuk costs KES 300-500 ($2.25-3.75) and takes 15-20 minutes across the Nyali Bridge. From beach hotels in Nyali, most venues are a KES 100-200 ($0.75-1.50) tuk-tuk ride. Bolt is available but less reliable than in Nairobi.
