Brew Bistro Rooftop

4.4
(3,200 reviews)
Hurlingham-Kilimani, Nairobi

Brew Bistro's Fortis Tower location puts the brewery concept on a rooftop, combining house-brewed beers with one of Nairobi's better high-rise views. The terrace wraps around the top floor, offering panoramic sight lines toward the Ngong Hills to the south and the city center to the east. The beer list matches the Westlands location: house Pilsner, IPA, stout, and seasonal rotations, all brewed on-site. A pint costs KES 400-700 ($3-5.25). Cocktails run KES 800-1,500 ($6-11.25). The food menu covers burgers, pizzas, ribs, and a weekend brunch that draws a dedicated crowd. Live music plays on select evenings, with acoustic and jazz acts taking the stage.

What to Expect

A rooftop bar with genuine views, good beer, and a crowd that's there to enjoy the evening rather than be seen. The terrace is the main draw; the interior bar area is a fallback for rainy days. The atmosphere shifts from relaxed afternoon drinks to something more social and energetic as the evening progresses.

Atmosphere

Elevated, social, and mellow. The view does most of the work.

Music

Background music by day, DJ sets on weekend evenings (deep house, soul, light afrobeats), occasional live acoustic acts

Dress Code

Smart casual. The rooftop crowd dresses a notch above casual but stays relaxed.

Sunset drinks with a view. Craft beer drinkers. A relaxed evening alternative to the Westlands club scene.

Insider Tip

The sunset from this rooftop is one of Nairobi's best free shows. Arrive by 5:30 PM on a clear day to secure a terrace table facing west. The weekend brunch (Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM to 2 PM) pairs well with their lighter beers. Try the seasonal brew; it's always the most interesting option on the menu.

Full Review

The Fortis Tower Brew Bistro competes directly with the Westlands location and, depending on your priorities, wins. The elevation is the differentiator. Sitting on the rooftop with a house-brewed IPA, watching Nairobi's skyline shift from afternoon gold to evening blue, is one of the city's more accessible pleasures.

The beer quality matches the original location. The Pilsner is crisp and sessionable, the IPA has genuine hop character (a rarity in East African brewing), and the stout works particularly well on Nairobi's cooler evenings. Seasonal experiments rotate quarterly and range from adventurous to confusing, but the willingness to experiment is part of the appeal. The non-beer options are competent: cocktails are well-made if not groundbreaking, and the wine list covers basics.

Food is a strength. The kitchen handles bar food at a level above what's expected. Burgers are made with quality beef, ribs get proper smoke time, and the pizza oven produces reasonable results. The weekend brunch has become an institution for the Kilimani and Hurlingham crowd, with eggs, pancakes, and bloody marys fueling Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The crowd is one of Nairobi's more balanced mixes. Young professionals, creative types, expat couples, and visiting families all share the terrace without tension. The absence of a club atmosphere keeps things relaxed. People talk, eat, drink, and watch the view. On live music nights, the acoustic acts provide a soundtrack without overwhelming conversation.

Service can slow down on busy weekend evenings when the terrace fills and the bar backs up. Ordering in rounds rather than individually helps. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the beer menu.

The Fortis Tower location is on Woodvale Grove in the Westlands area but closer to the Kilimani border. The building has parking and security. Leaving at night means Uber or Bolt, as always.
