John Bull Floripa

John Bull has occupied the same building on Avenida das Rendeiras since the 1990s, with the layout adapting over time but the core identity remaining steady. The main floor opens off a corridor entrance into a wide room with the stage along the back wall, a bar running down one side, and standing room and a few tables filling the open space. Sightlines from most of the floor work for the standard four-to-six-piece band setup, with the closer positions giving direct stage access and the back providing breathing room. An upstairs section opens for the bigger acts, with its own bar and a balcony view down to the main floor.

The programming runs Wednesday through Sunday with a calendar that prioritizes rock, blues, and reggae. Brazilian acts dominate the schedule, with established touring bands from Rio, São Paulo, and Porto Alegre rotating through alongside the strong local Santa Catarina scene. Occasional international acts pass through, particularly during summer high season. Cover charges scale with the act and the night; smaller weekday acts run free or R$15-25, mid-tier Friday and Saturday acts hit R$30-50, and headliners push R$80-150.

The sound system is the venue's strongest production feature. Properly calibrated for rock and amplified blues, with enough volume to fill the space without becoming punishing. The bigger acts sometimes push beyond what the room comfortably handles, but most of the calendar fits the space well. The bar program runs to standard beer, basic mixers, and a few caipirinha options at fair prices. Food is limited to bar snacks; most people eat elsewhere first.

Compared to the broader Lagoa music scene, John Bull is the established veteran. Casa de Noca and Céu de Floripa programmed similar acts at smaller scale and with rougher edges. Confraria das Artes runs more electronic-focused programming. John Bull's main strength is consistency: the venue has been delivering quality live rock and blues for three decades, and the calendar reflects that.
