Diesel Nacional

Sopocachi, La Paz

Diesel Nacional has been a fixture of Sopocachi's nightlife for over a decade, occupying a corner spot on Calle 20 de Octubre 2455 that gives it visibility from the main strip. The interior plays up an industrial theme with exposed pipes, metal fixtures, and concrete walls softened by warm lighting and rock band posters. The main room holds about 80 people comfortably, with a long bar running along one wall and a mix of high tables and booths filling the rest of the space. The playlist leans hard into rock and alternative, with cumbia and reggaeton creeping in after midnight when the DJ reads the room. A small kitchen puts out burgers, nachos, and bar food that's better than you'd expect. The crowd is young La Paz professionals, university students from UMSA, and the occasional backpacker who wandered over from the hostel zone. On a Friday night the room fills by 10:30 PM and stays packed until closing around 2 AM.

What to Expect

Walking in, you'll hear rock music at a volume that allows conversation but sets the tone. The lighting is dim with orange and amber accents bouncing off the industrial decor. The bar fills first, then the tables. By 11 PM the energy shifts from post-dinner drinks to proper nightlife, with people standing and the music getting louder.

Atmosphere

Loud, warm, and unpretentious. The kind of bar where regulars know the bartender's name and new faces get a nod.

Music

Rock, alternative, indie, with cumbia and reggaeton mixed in after midnight

Dress Code

Casual but put-together. Jeans, boots, and leather jackets fit the rock bar vibe. No one's wearing suits, but pure backpacker gear looks out of place.

Best For

Rock and alternative music fans looking for a genuine local bar experience. Good for small groups or couples who want to start the evening somewhere with character.

Payment

Cash (Bolivianos) preferred. Some cards accepted but the machine doesn't always work. Bring cash to be safe.

Price Range

Beer 12-18 BOB, cocktails 25-40 BOB, burgers 30-45 BOB, no cover charge

Beer ~$1.70-2.60 USD / ~1.55-2.40 EUR, cocktails ~$3.60-5.80 USD / ~3.30-5.30 EUR

Insider Tip

Arrive before 10 PM on Fridays to grab a booth. The kitchen closes around midnight, so eat early if you're planning to. The DJ takes requests if you catch him between sets.

Full Review

The entrance is easy to spot on the main drag of Calle 20 de Octubre. A narrow doorway opens into a room that feels bigger than it looks from outside, thanks to high ceilings and the industrial layout that keeps sightlines open. The bar itself is well-stocked by La Paz standards, with local beers, a decent singani selection, and the basics for cocktails. Service is friendly and efficient when the room isn't at capacity; on peak Fridays it slows down, so ordering two drinks at once saves time.

The food menu is limited but solid. The burgers are the standout, made with local beef and served on fresh bread. Nachos and empanadas round out the options. Eating here before moving to other bars is a practical move, since food options thin out later in Sopocachi.

Compared to the other bars on the same street, Diesel Nacional has the strongest identity. La Costilla de Adan is more bohemian and intimate; Hallwright's caters to the expat crowd; Lorca aims for cocktail sophistication. Diesel sits in the middle as the neighborhood's default rock bar, the place where you start the night when you don't have a specific plan.

The altitude factor is real. At 3,640 meters, your second beer feels like your fourth. The bartenders have seen enough altitude-impaired tourists to recognize the signs, and they'll pour you water without judgment if you ask. Pace yourself. The room gets stuffy when full, and stepping outside into La Paz's cold night air is a shock that hits harder when you've been drinking.

The Neighborhood

Diesel Nacional sits in the heart of Sopocachi's bar strip on Calle 20 de Octubre. La Costilla de Adan is a short walk away on Calle Belisario Salinas. Hallwright's is two blocks over on Calle Sanchez Lima. Plaza Avaroa, the neighborhood's social center, is a five-minute walk. Several late-night food stalls selling salchipapas and tucumanas operate nearby after midnight.

Getting There

From the tourist area around Calle Sagarnaga, a radio taxi to Sopocachi costs about 15-20 BOB and takes 10 minutes. From Zona Sur, expect 30-50 BOB and 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. The nearest teleferico station is a 15-minute walk, but the cable car stops running before nightlife ends.
