Komiteti is the most distinctive bar in Tirana and possibly in all of Albania. The concept, drinking among the artifacts of one of Europe's most isolated communist regimes, could easily be gimmicky. Instead, it's handled with intelligence and genuine passion. The owner collected these objects over years, and their arrangement isn't random decoration but a curated exhibition with a bar attached.
The rakija program is the drinking highlight. Albania produces excellent rakija from various fruits, and Komiteti offers varieties you won't find on other menus. The plum (raki rrushi) is the standard, but the mulberry and walnut versions are worth trying. The tasting flight is the best way to explore, and the bartender explains each variety's origin and production method with genuine knowledge.
The cocktail menu incorporates Albanian spirits and local ingredients in ways that show thought. A cocktail using Albanian mountain tea (caj mali) was surprising and good. The classics are well-made. Pricing is mid-range for Blloku, which means extremely cheap by any Western measure.
The space is small, and this is both its charm and its limitation. On a busy evening, finding a seat requires arriving before 8 PM or being willing to stand. The crowd is Blloku's most diverse: tourists with cameras, expats on repeat visits, young Albanian professionals who appreciate craft drinks, and the occasional older local who remembers when these objects were everyday items rather than museum pieces. Conversations start easily here because the setting provides infinite talking points.
