Overview and Location
Yunusabad sits in the northern sector of Tashkent, roughly 6 kilometers from the city center. The district has transformed over the past decade from a quiet residential area into one of Tashkent's most dynamic commercial and entertainment zones. New apartment towers, shopping malls, and business centers have brought a younger, more affluent population, and nightlife followed.
The club and bar scene here feels markedly different from Broadway's cafe culture. Yunusabad's venues have door policies, VIP sections, and sound systems that wouldn't be out of place in Moscow or Istanbul. On a Saturday night, the parking lots fill with BMWs and Mercedes, and the crowd inside dresses accordingly. This is where Tashkent's money goes out.
Legal Status
The same laws that apply across Uzbekistan apply here. Adult entertainment is illegal, and Yunusabad's venues operate as standard nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. There is no adult entertainment infrastructure in the district.
Police presence is lighter than on Broadway, partly because the clientele tends to be well-connected. That said, document checks of foreigners do happen, particularly outside venues late at night. Keep your passport and registration with you.
The clubs in Yunusabad operate with some degree of official approval, and relationships between venue owners and local authorities are generally cooperative. This means fewer random shutdowns or raids compared to less established parts of the city.
Costs and Pricing
Yunusabad is more expensive than Broadway, but still remarkably cheap by international standards:
- Club entry: 50,000-100,000 UZS ($4-$8.30 / 3.65-7.50 EUR), sometimes including one drink
- Beer: 20,000-35,000 UZS ($1.65-$2.90 / 1.50-2.65 EUR)
- Cocktails: 40,000-80,000 UZS ($3.30-$6.60 / 3-6 EUR)
- VIP table (minimum spend): 500,000-1,000,000 UZS ($41-$83 / 37.50-75 EUR) for a group
- Hookah: 50,000-80,000 UZS ($4-$6.60 / 3.65-6 EUR)
- Bottle service: 300,000-800,000 UZS ($25-$66 / 22.80-60 EUR) depending on spirit
Card payments work at most venues, but carry cash as a backup. Some smaller bars are cash-only.
Street-Level Detail
Yunusabad doesn't have a single "nightlife strip" the way Broadway does. Venues are spread across the district, typically occupying ground floors of commercial buildings or upper levels of newer mixed-use towers. You'll need a car or Yandex Go to hop between them.
Arriving at a club like Moda on a Saturday around midnight, you'll find a short queue at the entrance. A doorman assesses your appearance and may ask for ID. Inside, the layout is familiar to anyone who's been to European clubs: a main dance floor with elevated DJ booth, bar running along one wall, VIP booths flanking the opposite side, and a separate lounge area with lower music for conversation.
The crowd is young, mostly 22-35, and well-dressed. Women wear heels and cocktail attire. Men favor slim-fit shirts and polished shoes. The music ranges from Russian pop hits to international electronic and hip-hop. Bottle service at VIP tables is common among groups, and the culture of ordering a bottle of vodka or champagne for the table mirrors Russian nightlife traditions.
The rooftop venues offer a different experience. Sky Lounge, perched above the city, draws a slightly older crowd who come for the views and craft cocktails rather than dancing. On clear nights, you can see across Tashkent's flat sprawl to the Chimgan mountain foothills.
Safety
Yunusabad is a safe district overall. The clientele at most venues is affluent and the atmosphere is controlled. Still:
- Taxi safety: Don't accept rides from strangers outside clubs at closing time. Use Yandex Go exclusively. Pre-order before leaving the venue, as demand spikes at 3-4 AM
- Drink spiking: Rare but possible. Watch your drink, particularly if approached by strangers buying rounds
- Confrontations: Alcohol and ego occasionally produce conflicts, particularly among younger male patrons. Stay out of altercations between locals, as you won't know who is connected to whom
- Robbery: Walking alone through poorly lit residential streets late at night carries some risk. Take a car between venues
- Overcharging: Some venues may add items to your bill, especially if they perceive you as a wealthy foreigner. Review your check before paying
Cultural Norms
Yunusabad nightlife operates by a specific set of social codes:
- Dress codes are enforced. Doormen will turn away anyone in shorts, flip-flops, or athletic wear. When in doubt, overdress
- VIP culture is strong. Booking a table signals status, and table groups receive faster service and more attention from staff
- Russian is the dominant language in Yunusabad's nightlife, more so than Uzbek. Basic Russian phrases will serve you better than English in most venues
- Gender dynamics follow traditional patterns. Men are expected to approach, buy drinks, and take the initiative. Women rarely initiate
- Excessive drunkenness is poorly received. Uzbek drinking culture emphasizes control and composure, even while consuming significant amounts
- Photography and especially filming inside clubs is often discouraged. Ask before shooting video
Practical Information
Getting there: Yandex Go from central Tashkent costs 20,000-30,000 UZS ($1.65-$2.50) and takes 15-20 minutes. The Yunusobod metro line has stations in the district, but they're not always convenient to specific venues. A car is the practical choice for nightlife.
Best times: Clubs don't fill up until midnight or later. Arriving before 11 PM means drinking in a mostly empty room. Peak hours run from midnight to 3 AM. Friday and Saturday are the main nights. Some venues host themed events on Thursdays.
Duration: Plan for a full night if you're heading to Yunusabad's clubs. The typical outing runs from 11 PM to 3 or 4 AM. Pre-gaming at a restaurant in the district before heading to a club is common.
Nearby: The Tashkent City business complex and Samarkand Darvoza shopping center are in the district, offering dinner options before nightlife. The National Park of Uzbekistan is a pleasant daytime walk.
