Deansgate, Manchester

Gorilla occupies a railway arch at 54-56 Whitworth Street West, operating as a bar on the ground floor and a 500-capacity live music venue in the basement. The venue opened in 2012 and quickly established itself as one of Manchester's most reliable mid-size gig rooms. The upstairs bar serves craft beer (GBP 5-6.50), cocktails (GBP 8-12), and food from a kitchen that produces respectable burgers and burritos (GBP 8-14). The basement stage hosts four to five shows per week, covering indie, electronic, hip-hop, and everything between. Ticket prices range from GBP 8-22 depending on the act. After gigs, the basement transitions to a DJ-led club night on weekends, running until 3-4 AM.

What to Expect

A two-level venue with a proper bar upstairs and an intimate basement gig room. The basement has low ceilings that keep the sound contained and the atmosphere intense. For live shows, the proximity to the stage makes everything feel personal. After-hours DJ sets transform the basement into a small club.

Atmosphere

The upstairs bar is relaxed and sociable. The basement during a show is loud, close, and intense. After the gig, the DJ-led club nights keep the energy going with a looser, more social atmosphere.

Music

Indie, electronic, hip-hop, rock, and touring acts of varied genres in the basement. The upstairs bar plays background indie and alternative music.

Dress Code

Casual. Standard Manchester going-out wear. No dress code enforced.

Best For

Live music fans who prefer mid-size venues to arenas. The 500-capacity basement is large enough for a proper show but small enough to feel connected to the performers.

Payment

Cards and contactless accepted upstairs and down.

Price Range

Gig tickets GBP 8-22, cocktails GBP 8-12, pints GBP 5-6.50, food GBP 8-14

Insider Tip

The basement fills from the front, so arrive early for a spot near the stage. The upstairs bar is a solid pre-gig spot with food to line your stomach. Check listings midweek; some of the best shows happen on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when ticket prices are lowest.

Full Review

Whitworth Street West runs along the southern edge of Manchester's city center, parallel to the Rochdale Canal. Gorilla's ground-floor bar faces the street, while the basement venue sits beneath the railway arch. The arch structure gives the basement a curved ceiling and natural acoustics that work surprisingly well for live music.

The upstairs bar functions independently of the gig room. During the day and early evening, it's a reliable place for food and drinks. The burgers are above-average pub food. The cocktail list is short but competently mixed. Craft beer options rotate and include local breweries.

The basement is where things get interesting. At 500 capacity, it's the ideal size for watching bands on the way up. Acts that sell out the 500-cap room at Gorilla today might be filling the 2,000-cap Apollo or 5,000-cap AO Arena within a year. Catching them in this room is a qualitatively different experience. The stage is low, the crowd is close, and the sound fills the arch without needing to be pushed too hard.

After gigs, the basement pivots to club nights on weekends. The transition works because the room is already warm, the PA is set up, and the crowd has been loosened by the live music. DJ sets run until 3-4 AM.

The location on Whitworth Street West is less convenient than the Northern Quarter for bar-hopping, but it's a straight walk from Oxford Road station and within range of Deansgate and Peter Street. The canal path offers a scenic walk to Castlefield or Deansgate Locks, though it's better in daylight than after midnight.

The Neighborhood

Whitworth Street West connects Oxford Road to Deansgate, running alongside the Rochdale Canal. The Home arts center and several canal-side bars are nearby. The Northern Quarter is a 10-minute walk north.

Getting There

Oxford Road station is a 5-minute walk. Deansgate station is 7 minutes. St Peter's Square tram stop is 8 minutes. Multiple bus routes run along Oxford Road.
