Soho, London

Freedom has been part of Soho's LGBTQ+ scene since 1990, sitting at 60-66 Wardour Street across two floors. The ground floor is a bar with booth seating, a long cocktail list, and DJ sets most evenings. The basement hosts cabaret nights, drag performances, and themed club events. The venue draws a mixed crowd: primarily LGBTQ+ but welcoming to everyone. Weeknight cabaret shows start around 8 PM and are often free or GBP 5 entry. Weekend DJ nights run until 3 AM with GBP 5-10 entry after 10 PM. Cocktails cost GBP 10-14 and the happy hour (5-8 PM daily) knocks prices down to GBP 7-9.

Full Review

Freedom occupies a prime Wardour Street location and makes the most of it. The ground floor bar is spacious by Soho standards, with booth seating along the walls and a bar that runs the length of the room. During the day and early evening it's a pleasant place for cocktails and conversation. The music stays at background level until the DJs take over later in the evening.

The basement is where the entertainment happens. On cabaret nights, a small stage hosts drag performers, singers, and comedians who work the room with practiced ease. The audience interaction is part of the show, so sitting near the front means you're part of the act. On DJ nights, the basement becomes a small but effective dance floor.

The cocktail list is solid and reasonably priced for Soho. Happy hour represents genuine value at GBP 7-9 for cocktails that would cost GBP 12-14 at full price. The bartenders know their way around a shaker.

Freedom's strength is its atmosphere. The venue has been part of Soho's LGBTQ+ community for over 30 years, and that history creates a warmth and welcome that newer venues sometimes struggle to replicate. The crowd is diverse in every sense. Regulars mix with tourists, pre-theater couples sit alongside groups starting their night out.

The only downside is the weekend queue. After 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, the line can stretch down Wardour Street. Arriving before 10 PM or on a weeknight avoids this entirely.

The Neighborhood

Wardour Street runs through the center of Soho, parallel to Dean Street. Old Compton Street, the heart of London's LGBTQ+ scene, is one block south. Dozens of restaurants and bars sit within a two-minute walk in any direction.

Getting There

Leicester Square station is a 4-minute walk south. Tottenham Court Road is 3 minutes north. Piccadilly Circus is 5 minutes southwest. All three offer Night Tube services on weekends.
