The Bistro

Kololo, Kampala

The Bistro operates from a converted residential property on Cooper Road, one block back from Kololo's main strip. The setup is split between an indoor dining room with air conditioning and a larger outdoor courtyard with plastic chairs and tables under a tin-roof covering. Capacity is around 80 people across both areas. The menu covers pub basics: grilled tilapia, chips, pizza, and a few pasta dishes. Beer is cold and cheap by Kololo standards. The Wednesday quiz night has become an institution, drawing teams of NGO workers, teachers, and young professionals who compete for bar tab prizes. Weekend evenings bring a mixed crowd of locals and expats who use the place as a warm-up before heading to Acacia Avenue's more polished venues.

Full Review

The Bistro fills a gap in Kololo's nightlife that might not be obvious at first glance. While Cayenne and the hotel bars aim for sophistication, The Bistro just aims to be a comfortable place to eat, drink, and hang out without spending too much. It succeeds.

The Wednesday quiz is the highlight. It's well-organized, genuinely competitive, and draws a crowd that takes it seriously without being aggressive about it. Teams form organically and solo visitors are usually absorbed into a group. It's the best social event in Kololo for meeting people.

The food is honest. The grilled tilapia is fresh from Lake Victoria and properly seasoned. The pizza won't win awards but it's perfectly acceptable drinking food. Portions are generous and prices are lower than anywhere else in the neighborhood.

The physical space is nothing special. A converted house with an outdoor courtyard won't feature in any design magazine. But the lack of pretension is the point. People come here to relax, and the unpressured atmosphere delivers that consistently.

The Neighborhood

Cooper Road is one block back from Acacia Avenue, Kololo's main strip. The Bistro sits in a residential area that's quieter than the main road. Walking to Acacia Avenue takes 5-10 minutes during daylight but should be done by Uber after dark.

Getting There

Uber or SafeBoda from CBD takes 10-15 minutes. Tell the driver 'The Bistro, Cooper Road, Kololo.' From Acacia Avenue, it's a 2-minute drive or 5-minute daytime walk.
