Kololo, Kampala

Cayenne occupies a converted colonial-era house on Acacia Avenue, Kololo's main entertainment strip. The interior features exposed brick walls, dim lighting, and a long mahogany bar that seats roughly 20. The main room holds about 80 people, with a smaller back room that opens for overflow on busy nights. The cocktail menu runs to 30-plus options, mixed by bartenders who actually know what they're doing. Live jazz sessions happen on Thursday evenings, drawing a crowd of diplomats, NGO directors, and Kampala's business elite who treat the place as their default meeting point. The outdoor terrace wraps around two sides of the building, with seating for another 40 under string lights. On Friday evenings, the terrace fills first. The kitchen serves tapas-style plates that lean Mediterranean: hummus, bruschetta, grilled halloumi. The wine list is short but functional, sourced mainly from South Africa.

What to Expect

You walk through a garden gate into a quiet courtyard that feels removed from Kampala's chaos. Inside, the lighting is low and the air conditioning works. The crowd is well-dressed and conversation-oriented rather than party-focused. Music stays at background level except during live performances.

Atmosphere

Polished and conversational. Think upscale cocktail bar rather than nightclub.

Music

Live jazz on Thursdays, curated lounge playlists (soul, R&B, soft house) on other nights

Smart casual. Closed shoes and collared shirts for men. Most women dress elegantly. You'll feel out of place in sneakers and a t-shirt.

Full Review

Cayenne stands out in Kampala because it actually tries. The cocktails are properly made, the staff know the menu, and the space has been designed with intention rather than thrown together. The brick interior and the terrace create two distinct experiences: inside is intimate and air-conditioned, outside is social and slightly louder.

The Thursday jazz night is the highlight of the week. A rotating cast of Ugandan jazz musicians plays a two-hour set that draws a loyal crowd. The music is good, not background filler. Arrive by 7:30 PM to get a seat with a decent view of the musicians.

Drinks are pricey by Kampala standards but reasonable by any international measure. The cocktail list covers the classics well. The bartender I spoke with had trained in Nairobi and knew his way around a shaker. The tapas menu works as a complement to drinking rather than a full dinner destination.

The crowd is distinctly Kololo: diplomats, UN staff, senior NGO people, and Kampala's business set. The vibe is mature and relaxed. This isn't where you come to dance or get loud. It's where you come when you want a proper drink and adult conversation in a city that doesn't offer many options at this level.

The Neighborhood

Cayenne sits on Acacia Avenue, the main strip of Kololo's entertainment and dining scene. Iguana is within walking distance during daylight hours. The Protea Hotel and its Sky Lounge are a short drive up the hill.

Getting There

Uber or SafeBoda from Kampala CBD takes 10-15 minutes and costs UGX 8,000-15,000. The venue is on the main road with visible signage. From Entebbe Airport, allow 45-90 minutes and UGX 80,000-120,000.
