Iguana
Iguana has been a fixture on Acacia Avenue for over a decade, serving as the default after-work spot for Kampala's expat community. The open-air garden is the heart of the place: a gravel courtyard shaded by mature trees, with wooden tables and chairs spread across a space that holds 100-plus people comfortably. Inside, a smaller bar area has air conditioning and a few TV screens showing sports. The menu runs standard pub fare: burgers, chicken wings, fish and chips, and a few Ugandan dishes. The bar stocks imported beers alongside the local Nile Special and Bell. The kitchen stays open until 10 PM, and the bar runs later. Wednesday trivia nights pull a regular crowd of embassy staff and development workers who've made this their local.

Relaxed, social, garden-party energy. The kind of place where you plan to have one beer and stay for four.
Background rock, pop, and occasional reggae playlist. Not a music-focused venue.

Full Review
Iguana works because it doesn't try to be anything it isn't. It's a garden pub that serves cold beer, decent food, and provides a comfortable space for people to talk. In a city where many venues overcomplicate things or aim for an atmosphere they can't sustain, Iguana just delivers the basics well.
The garden is the reason to come. Kampala's climate means outdoor drinking is comfortable year-round, and the tree cover keeps the space cool even during the day. At night, string lights and candles create an atmosphere that's inviting without being pretentious.
The food is solid pub fare. The burgers use good beef and come with proper chips. The wings are reliable. Nothing will surprise you, but nothing will disappoint either. The kitchen closing at 10 PM is worth knowing.
The crowd is heavily expat, especially on weekdays. Wednesday trivia night is the social anchor of the week. If you're a solo traveler looking to meet people in Kampala, show up at Iguana on a Wednesday or Friday evening and you'll be in conversation within 20 minutes. The regulars are welcoming and the atmosphere encourages mingling.
