Sky Lounge

4.1
(720 reviews)
Kololo, Kampala

Sky Lounge perches atop the Protea Hotel on Kololo Hill Drive, offering what might be Kampala's best panoramic view. The open-air terrace wraps around three sides of the hotel's top floor, looking out over the city's jumbled rooftops and green hills in every direction. On clear evenings, you can see as far as Lake Victoria. The space holds roughly 60 people across a mix of lounge seating, high tables, and the bar itself. The cocktail menu is hotel-caliber: competent if not inspired, with the classics covered and a few tropical additions featuring passionfruit and mango. The wine list draws from South Africa and includes a handful of French and Italian bottles. Light bites are available but this isn't a dinner destination. The bar opens at 4 PM, hitting its stride at sunset when the view justifies the premium pricing.

What to Expect

An elevator ride to the top floor opens onto a breezy terrace with Kampala spread below. The seating is comfortable hotel furniture. Service is attentive and slightly formal. The crowd is mixed: hotel guests, local professionals on dates, and the occasional tourist who's heard about the view.

Atmosphere

Elevated and calm. The altitude (both physical and aspirational) sets the tone.

Music

Soft lounge music, jazz, and ambient playlists. Never loud enough to compete with conversation.

Dress Code

Smart casual. Hotel bar standards apply. Closed shoes and long trousers for men.

Best For

Sunset drinks, dates, visitors wanting a panoramic view of Kampala, quiet evenings

Payment

All major credit cards accepted. Hotel bar pricing, so expect to pay at international rates. Mobile money accepted.

Arrive by 5:30 PM on clear days to grab a west-facing seat for sunset. The passionfruit martini is the house specialty and actually good. Sunday afternoon is the quietest time and offers the best chance of unobstructed views.

Full Review

Sky Lounge exists primarily because of the view, and the view delivers. Kampala is a city built across seven hills, and looking out from the Protea Hotel's rooftop puts the geography into perspective. Green hills, red-tile roofs, church spires, and construction cranes create a skyline that tells you everything about where this city is in its development.

The drinks are hotel-standard. This means correctly made but without the personality of a dedicated cocktail bar like Cayenne. The passionfruit martini is the one standout, using local fruit that tastes better here than the imported stuff elsewhere. Beer is cold, wine is drinkable, and the bartender is efficient.

The crowd is more reserved than at the street-level Kololo bars. Couples on dates, business travelers unwinding, and hotel guests who discovered the terrace make up most of the clientele. The conversation volume stays low, helped by the open-air setting that disperses sound.

Closing at 11 PM means this is a pre-dinner or sunset destination rather than a late-night spot. Plan to watch the sunset here and then move to Acacia Avenue for the rest of the evening.

The Neighborhood

The Protea Hotel sits on Kololo Hill Drive, above the main Acacia Avenue strip. The hilltop location provides the elevation for the views. Acacia Avenue's bars and restaurants are a 5-minute Uber ride downhill.

Getting There

Uber or SafeBoda to the Protea Hotel, Kololo Hill Drive. From Acacia Avenue, it's a 5-minute ride uphill. From the CBD, 15-20 minutes. Tell the driver 'Protea Hotel Kololo' and they'll know it.
