Le Baroque

Lac District, Tunis

Le Baroque positions itself as the Lac District's premium cocktail lounge, occupying a ground-floor space in the Lac 2 area with an interior that commits fully to its name. Dark leather banquettes, low brass tables, textured wallpaper, amber lighting, and a long bar with a marble top create an atmosphere that could pass for a hotel lounge in any European capital. Capacity is around 70 across the main lounge area and a few semi-private booth sections. The cocktail menu runs to about 25 options, mixing classics with house creations that incorporate North African ingredients like harissa-infused spirits, fig syrup, and orange blossom water. The bartenders have been trained and it shows. Midweek, Le Baroque functions as an after-work networking venue for the Lac District's corporate population: lawyers, bankers, consultants, and NGO staffers who occupy the surrounding offices. By Wednesday or Thursday the energy shifts, with the DJ stepping in and the crowd transitioning from business to social. The weekend crowd is more mixed and more interested in the cocktails than the networking.

Full Review

Le Baroque is the Lac District's answer to the question of where to drink when you want the drink to matter. In a city where most bars treat cocktails as an afterthought, Le Baroque's bartenders take the craft seriously, and the difference is noticeable from the first sip.

The house cocktails are the highlight. The use of local ingredients, fig, harissa, orange blossom, pomegranate, gives the menu a Tunisian identity that imported cocktail menus can't replicate. The orange blossom sour balances floral sweetness with citrus acidity in a way that works for people who don't usually order sweet drinks. The harissa margarita has enough heat to be interesting without being a gimmick. The classics are also well-executed, with proper technique and quality spirits.

The space supports the drink program. The leather banquettes are comfortable for long sessions. The lighting is low enough for intimacy but bright enough to see your drink's color. The acoustics keep conversation possible even when the DJ is playing. These are design choices that suggest someone thought about the customer experience rather than just the aesthetics.

The midweek crowd is interesting in its own way. The Lac District's corporate and diplomatic population uses Le Baroque as an informal meeting space, and eavesdropping on conversations in French, Arabic, and English reveals the international currents flowing through Tunis's business world.

Weekends bring a younger, more social crowd. The DJ sets push the energy higher, and by 23:00 on a Friday, the lounge transforms from a quiet cocktail bar into something closer to a social hub. It never becomes a club, the space is too small and the furniture too expensive for that, but the atmosphere lifts considerably.

The prices are the highest of any standalone bar in the Lac District, but the quality-to-price ratio is strong. A EUR 5-8 cocktail here beats a EUR 12-15 cocktail at most European bars.

The Neighborhood

Le Baroque is in the Lac 2 area, on the ground floor of a commercial building. The Movenpick Hotel and Sky Bar are nearby. Mist Club is a short taxi ride away. The Lac 1 zone with Havana Club is about 10 minutes by taxi.
