Cause Effect Cocktail Kitchen
Cause Effect Cocktail Kitchen and Cape Brandy Bar sits on Riebeek Street (a short drive from Sea Point proper, technically in the City Bowl, but firmly within the Sea Point crowd's orbit). The concept is built around bespoke cocktails: you choose base spirit, flavor direction, and intensity, and the bartenders build your drink from scratch. The space is sleek and modern, with a long marble bar, pendant lighting, and an open kitchen layout that lets you watch the bartenders work. It has appeared on multiple 'best bars in Africa' lists and the awards are deserved. Capacity is around 60 people, keeping the experience personal.

What to Expect
A polished, modern bar where the bartenders take center stage. You sit at the bar or at a small table, receive a menu that reads more like a flavor map than a drinks list, and either choose a listed cocktail or go custom. The atmosphere is conversational and appreciative, like a wine tasting translated into cocktail form.
Refined, engaging, and focused on the drinks. The bartender-patron interaction is the centerpiece of the experience.
Background lounge and electronic music. Subtle and never intrusive.
Smart casual. The clientele dresses well, and the bar's design suggests the same. No dress code is formally enforced, but you'll feel out of place in beach clothes.
Cocktail enthusiasts, couples, and anyone who appreciates the craft of mixology. Also a strong choice for impressing a date.

Insider Tip
Do the bespoke cocktail experience at least once. Tell the bartender what spirits you like, what flavors appeal to you, and let them work. The Cape brandy selection is worth exploring if you haven't tried South African brandy before.
Full Review
Cause Effect has earned its reputation through consistency rather than hype. The bar's concept revolves around a flavor matrix: you select from columns of base spirits, flavor profiles (citrus, smoky, herbaceous, etc.), and intensity levels. The bartender then creates your cocktail on the spot, explaining each ingredient as it goes in. It sounds gimmicky on paper. In practice, it produces better drinks than most preset menus.
The space is carefully designed. The marble bar runs most of the room's length, with seating that puts you close enough to watch the bartenders work. Behind them, shelves of spirits and house-made infusions line the wall. Small tables along the opposite wall accommodate groups of two to four. The lighting is warm but bright enough to see what you're drinking, which matters when the presentation is this good.
The Cape brandy program deserves special mention. South African brandy has been underrated for decades, and Cause Effect showcases it alongside its cocktail offering. Brandy flights (three to five pours of different producers and ages) cost ZAR 180-250 and provide a genuine education in a spirit most visitors haven't explored.
Pricing sits at the top of Cape Town's cocktail bar range. A custom cocktail runs ZAR 120-160, with premium spirit upgrades pushing higher. For the quality delivered, it represents fair value, particularly compared to hotel bars charging similar prices for standard pours.
The crowd is discerning. You won't find groups doing shots or birthday celebrations getting rowdy. The atmosphere is closer to a tasting room than a bar, and that's clearly intentional. Solo visitors will find the bar seating comfortable and the bartenders genuinely interested in conversation.
The drawback is availability. The small capacity means weekends fill by 7 PM. No reservations for walk-ins. Weeknight visits are easier and give you more bartender attention.
