The Cosmopolitan
The Cosmopolitan operates as a multi-level venue in the Maboneng Precinct, combining a ground-floor restaurant, a mezzanine cocktail bar, and a performance space that hosts live music and DJ events. The restaurant serves a menu influenced by pan-African and international flavors, while the bar upstairs focuses on cocktails and a curated wine list. Sunday sessions have become the venue's signature event, drawing a crowd for afternoon jazz that transitions into deep house as the sun sets. The interior blends industrial architecture (exposed brick, steel beams) with warm touches (leather seating, soft lighting) that make the space feel upscale without losing Maboneng's creative edge.
What to Expect
A layered venue that shifts character as you move through it. The restaurant is conversational and well-lit. The mezzanine bar is darker, more intimate, and cocktail-focused. The performance space fills with energy during live events. Each level feels like a different venue under the same roof.
Sophisticated by Maboneng standards, warm and musical. The kind of place where the food, drinks, and music all deserve individual attention.
Live jazz on Sundays, deep house and Afro house DJ sets on weekends, background soul and R&B during dinner service
Smart casual. Maboneng's creative energy meets a slightly more polished standard here than at Uncle Merv's. Look put together without overdressing.
A complete evening in one building: dinner, cocktails, and live music. Particularly strong for Sunday afternoon socializing.

Full Review
The Cosmopolitan has evolved into Maboneng's most complete venue. Where Living Room offers views and Uncle Merv's offers community, The Cosmopolitan offers a proper evening out with multiple chapters.
The ground-floor restaurant serves well-prepared food that draws from across the continent and beyond. Slow-braised lamb shank with pap (ZAR 190) and pan-fried line fish with West African pepper sauce (ZAR 175) represent the menu's range. Portions are generous, presentation is careful, and the kitchen maintains consistency across services. Dinner reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday.
The mezzanine cocktail bar is the hidden gem. A short staircase leads to a darker, more intimate space with a dedicated bartender and a menu that takes more risks than the restaurant's drinks list. South African spirits feature prominently, with cocktails built around Cape fynbos gin, Paarl potstill brandy, and locally produced bitters. A well-made Cosmopolitan (the house signature, naturally) runs ZAR 110.
The performance space shifts configuration depending on the event. Sunday jazz sessions use a small stage with cabaret-style seating. Weekend DJ events clear the floor for dancing. The sound system is professional grade, installed specifically for live music, and the acoustics of the industrial space work in its favor.
Sunday afternoon is the venue's peak experience. A jazz ensemble starts around 2 PM, playing to a crowd that's settled in with lunch and drinks. As the afternoon progresses, the jazz gives way to deep house, and the energy shifts from dining to socializing to gentle dancing. It's a Johannesburg cultural experience that happens to be centered on a bar.
The crowd is Maboneng's upper tier: professionals, creatives, and visitors who know to seek it out. The age range is broader than at other Maboneng venues, with 30-somethings and 40-somethings forming the core.
